As Japan nears the end of the nineteenth century and power shifts from the Shogunate to the Emperor, the Shinsengumi, a band of samurai, farmers, and peasants, rise to resist the tide of change. Led by Isami Kondo, a farmer-turned-warrior, they fight to defend the crumbling Shogunate amid betrayal and bloodshed.
