Satyendra "Sattu" Mishra (Rajkummar Rao) and Aarti Shukla (Kriti Kharbanda) meet for a proposed arranged marriage and fall in love in the process. Sattu is a clerk, and Aarti wants to be PCS officer and wants to work after marriage. Aarti wanted to study more and build her career but was being forced into marriage by her conservative father Shaym. Shyam says that Aarti is a fool, as Sattu comes from a family which is much richer than their own. Shyam says that no IAS or IPS officer will choose Aarti as his bride.Shyam is not supportive of Aarti giving the PCS exam and says that such jobs are not for women.
Accepting her wishes, Sattu says that he wants a life partner and a friend, and not a house maid. Sattu says that his family has conservative views and that he knows how to handle them. He falls in love with Aarti. Aarti finds Sattu's off-traditional views convenient, while Sattu is mesmerized by Aarti's beauty and intelligence.
Sattu's mother Shanti (Alka Amin) is greedy and has asked for 25 Lakhs as dowry in marriage. Sattu's father, Jugal Kishore Mishra (K K Raina) is a gentleman (he was a university professor for 30 years) and is cowed by his greedy wife and unable to push back. Poonam (Neha Agarwal) is Sattu's sister. Shanti argues that they need the dowry from Sattu, so they can pay dowry when Poonam gets married.
Aarti's father Shyam Sunder (Govind Namdev) had a budget of only 12 Lakhs. Aarti's maternal uncle Jogi asks Shyam to leave, when Sattu's maternal uncle Mahesh (Vipin Sharma) starts getting aggressive and says that Sattu has an offer for Rs 40 Lakhs, and they only reduced the ask as Sattu like Aarti. Shyam tries to appeal to Jugal, who is willing to relax the demand, but he constantly interrupted by Mahesh, who is adamant that the marriage cannot take place without a dowry payment of Rs 25 Lakhs (Rs 18 Lakhs in cash and Rs 7 Lakhs in goods).Shyam agrees to pay 25 Lakhs, since he knows that good boys won't come for any less than that.
Satyendra and Aarti meet during their courtship days he contributes to the dowry and hand over Rs 10 Lakhs to Arti. They share a beautiful bonding having fallen for each other.
On the day of marriage Aarti's sister Abha (Nayani Dixit) goes to Sattu's house for the Haldi ceremony. There she meets Shanti and comes to know that Sattu's mother is completely against Aarti working after marriage and is unaware of the fact that Sattu has accepted it.
On the night of their marriage, the results of the PCS exam come out and Aarti has passed it successfully. Abha sees that Aarti is very excited as she believes that she will become an officer after getting married to Sattu. Abha tries to tell Shyam and her mother Manju that they are making a big mistake by marrying Aarti in Sattu's family, but they brush her off as the wedding procession is at their door.
Abha advises Aarti that she should run away from the marriage and excel professionally, otherwise, her in-laws will destroy her life just like how Abha's in-laws destroyed Abha's life. Abha says that once Aarti is an officer, many clerks like Sattu will work under her. Jogi hears the conversation between Aarti and Abha and asks Aarti what she wants to do.Aarti, in huge dilemma, chooses her career over love and runs away.
Aarti's uncle Jogi (Manoj Pahwa) tells Sattu & his father that Aarti ran away after finding out about the demand for 25 Lakhs dowry from their family. Sattu is devastated and heartbroken and his family also gets badly humiliated when Jogi manhandles them to demand that they return the Rs 18 Lakhs that was paid in cash to them. Jogi arranges an armed guard to ensure that Sattu and his family are not released till the cash money is returned. Sattu has to go back home on foot to get the money and get his family released. Shanti had spent Rs 8 Lakhs already and had Rs 10 Lakhs left. She has to sell jewels that she had kept for Poonam's marriage, to complete the Rs 18 Lakhs.
Due to this incident, both Sattu as well as his family are disgraced by the society since the people assume there must be something wrong with him because of which the girl ran away on the night of the wedding.Sattu then decides to take up IAS and excel in his life and career.
After 5 years, Aarti is now a PCS Officer in Lucknow and is accused of taking a bribe. Her investigation case is handled by the local district magistrate, who is revealed to be Sattu, now an influential IAS Officer. Unable to forget his heartbreak as well as his family's disgrace due to Aarti, Sattu uses his power to torment her and outright tells her that he loathes her.
Satyendra tries to take revenge from Aarti by humiliating her during the case inquiry. He tests her innocence/character at many instances. He asks for sexual favors, which she refuses, then he tells Aarti to send the bribe money to him, so that he can spin the case to avoid jail-time for her. She refuses again.
Unable to endure Sattu's emotional torment, Aarti confronts him and informs him that she left the marriage for her PCS training; but Satyendra retorts that she should have at least confided in him beforehand as he loved her so much.
Later, Aarti meets Mr. Kukreja (Ashish Kapoor), who accuses her of taking the bribe. When Sattu learns about the meeting, he immediately orders for Aarti to be arrestedDuring the final hearing, it is revealed that Aarti's friend Neelam (Neha D. Bhriguvanshi) was the one who took the bribe and Sattu had Aarti sent to the prison to protect her from an assassination attempt planned by Neelam and Mr. Kukreja. Aarti is found not guilty, and Sattu permits her to resume her work.
Aarti and her family are happy and credit Satyendra for his noble gesture. Aarti now madly fallen for Sattu once again. Realising that Sattu's hatred towards her stems from his heartbreak, Aarti spends the next few days attempting to win back Sattu's love. However, when Sattu spurns her and tells her he has suffered a lot due to her, Aarti decides to move on.
After a few months Aarti's marriage is arranged with another man, Sharad (Karanvir Sharma). On her wedding day, Satyendra finally realizes his feelings for Aarti and proposes to marry her. Aarti refuses, however, saying she doesn't want to hurt anybody's feelings again. With few dramatic twists after that, it is revealed that Sharad is actually Aarti's brother-in-law, not her fiance; the entire drama was a setup by both families to make Sattu firmly agree for marriage. Finally, Sattu and Aarti get married.
