In one day, successful city lawyer Laura Gibson's world falls apart. Suddenly she realizes that she no longer knows her husband or her children, or where her all-consuming career is going. On a whim, she grabs at a position as magistrate in the small coastal town of Pearl Bay, and with two bewildered kids in tow she sets off to change all their lives forever.

Laura Gibson is a big-city lawyer who makes a sea change and moves to the small town of Pearl Bay for a new life. Pearl Bay has been almost completely cut off from the outside world since the Port Deakin Bridge was closed 5 years before, but most of the residents like it this way. The town's residents, however, are stranger than the city folk and Laura soon learns that the town lives on friendship and gossip.
