Synopsis

In 1994, Sandy Wexler (Adam Sandler) is a talent manager working in Los Angeles. He has a reputation for having an extremely eccentric personality (approaches potential clients on the streets and solicits them. Had a huge fake laugh and applauding combo. Ate with his mouth open. Lived in a cabana by the pool of the biggest property in Bel air which belonged to a Hebrew Iranian Firuz (Rob Schneider), who needs Sandy to stay on the property for Legal reasons) and for often telling huge lies to sound more important than he really is (named dropped all the time), resulting in his clients never finding success except for his first, a man named Alfred, though only after he left Sandy. His current clientele include Ted Rafferty (Kevin James), a ventriloquist (A middle type act, but Sandy believed in him completely), Kevin Conners (Colin Quinn), a comedian, Amy Baskin (Jackie Sandler), an actress, Gary Rogers (Nick Swardson), a daredevil (he tried to jump over 10 trailers, but got hit by an eagle and had a nasty fall), and Bobby Barnes (Terry Crews), a wrestler.

While at Six Flags, Sandy sees a young woman, Courtney Clarke (Jennifer Hudson), performing in a stage show. Immediately entranced by both her voice and her beauty, he convinces her that he can make her a star. Courtney is willing to sign with Sandy but makes him take permission from her dad Willy Clarke (Aaron Neville), who is in prison.Sandy gives Courtney a complete makeover including makeup, wardrobe, dancing lessons, profile shots with photographer Yuri (Ido Mosseri)..Sandy is known to be polite to new talent, when they are nobodies in the industry. Barry Bubatzi (Milo Ventimiglia) thanks Sandy for being polite when he was an assistant, and now has a big role at a recording studio. Cindy Marvelle (Jane Seymour) is Sandy's neighbor whose husband Peter Marvelle (Sandy Wernick) is on the death bed. Cindy drops enough hints that she wants to sleep with Sandy.

Sandy gets Courtney a meeting with a studio, after recording her demo at a cut rate shop (where he had to record the song thrice as the stoned technician Jared (Jared Sandler), forgot to press "record" every time)The studio likes the demo and signs on Courtney. Sandy invites all his clients to his house for a celebration, but then end up in Firuz's pool, which was strictly forbidden. that night Firuz calls Sandy and tells him that this is strike one.

She records several singles that become hits, but his antics continue to cause her trouble (Quincy Jones invites Courtney to his party and Sandy tags along. Sandy offends Quincy by saying that his $8K wine is a bit grape tasting. He also talks Courtney out of a appearance on a show with Arsenio by bluffing that she is booked with Jimmy Carson (even though Jimmy has been retired for 2 years)). Eventually, her boyfriend, rapper Bling (Lamorne Morris), convinces Sandy that his presence is a hindrance to Courtney's potential fame, and he resigns as her manager. Sandy wanted Courtney to record more albums and was keeping her away from professional publicists. While Bling gave her a lot of top PR that money could buy. Bling also got her a spot on the Arsenio show. Sandy got Gary to open for her first stage performance, and Gary broke his hip and sprayed blood all over the first 3 rows.Bling convinces Sandy that he is holding Courtney back and she is in the big leagues now.

While Sandy continues to struggle with both his feelings for Courtney and his clients, Courtney grows more and more famous, eventually winning a Grammy. Bobby soon sees success when Sandy helps him become champ, while Courtney, feeling unsatisfied with her fame, spirals into drinking and a string of failed relationships. She seeks comfort with Sandy, but their one-night stand goes nowhere. She eventually tells him that she's quitting the business and leaving to get married.

Depressed by Courtney's decision, Sandy acts out worse than ever (makes Bobby sing Courtney's song inside the ring, which his audience hates. Gary sets himself on fire in a stunt, where he is supposed to land inside a swimming pool. But he is stuck by a bat and falls on the Hollywood sign and sets it on fire. He makes Amy sign up for a vaginal discharge ointment, by telling her that it was a coffee commercial), which costs him all his clients except Ted. Ted auditions for a comedy role when the regular guy commits suicide. The network likes Ted and wants Sandy to make a deal. Sandy has a heart attack but shows immense commitment by still going to the meeting and negotiating for Ted and getting him a 3-year deal (20 episodes min) at $50K per episode. He meets Alfred, finally revealed to be Weird Al Yankovic, at Six Flags. Sandy thinks he and Al drifted apart as they got too close which got in the way of business. Al says he parted ways with Sandy as Sandy could never tell the truth to anyone. Al convinces Sandy to stop telling people what Sandy thinks he wants them to hear and instead tell them the truth. To this end, he has his landlord bring Courtney to Griffith Observatory, where he admits his feelings to her, which she reciprocates, and they're married in a ceremony officiated by one of Ted's puppets.

Sandy's newfound honesty also gets him back his clients as well as many new ones. Eventually, he and Courtney learn that a puppet can't be an official priest and after twenty years are married for real.
