Synopsis

Badri Prasad Sharma (Utpal Dutt) lives with his four sons Eldest Amar (Biswajeet), Kamal (Vijay Arora), Third one (Dilip Dhawan) and 2 daughters, Shanti (who is married) and Geeta (Sudha Chopra) or Gulti. Only the youngest son, Sunil (Anil Kapoor) and Geeta are unmarried.Sujata Sharma (Raakhee) is Sunil's eldest sister-in-law. Kamal's wife Sheila (Rajnibala). Third daughter-in-law Sapna. Sujata is the only daughter-in-law that actually does any work in the house. Sujata has even fired the house maids, as the house cannot afford such expenses, and has taken on the entire workload.

Sapna feels entitled since she also earns and thinks that she should get special treatment in the house.

Sunil or Saaheb as he is referred to, is the black sheep of the family - unemployed & uneducated - only interested in playing football. Badri hates this. The entire house uses Saaheb for their odd jobs and considers him worthless. He brings water for Kamal's clients (Kamal is a lawyer and meets his clients at home office), and shaving blades for Amar (Amar gets Saaheb to get one blade at a time to save money). He is sent to the market to get betel leaf for Sheila, and Sapna gets him to get her broken sandals mended.Sapna and her husband feel entitled to several privileges in the house as they are both earning members of the family.Saaheb is a Goalkeeper and football is his passion. But he is demotivated all the time by his brothers and their wives. Only person who understands him is his elder sister-in-law Sujata with whom he shares a motherly bond.

Natasha 'Nikki' (Amrita Singh) is Saaheb's next-door neighbor and wants to befriend him. Saaheb ignores Nikki, but she is very persistent and follows Saaheb everywhere he goes.Saaheb saves her from some goons that were harassing her, and she falls in love with Saaheb. Saaheb finds a stranger lurking around Natasha's house and gets him arrested and it turns out to be Pareshan (Deven Verma), Nikki's maternal Uncle, who is a film writer. Nikki stays with her dad (Satyen Kappu) and mom. Pareshan claims that he wrote the film "Sholay" and sold it to writers Salim-Javed whom he met on a train ride to Bombay.

Nikki introduces Saaheb to her parents and things are heading in the right direction. Saaheb fails his BA exams on his 3rd and last attempt. Badri is distraught and knows that no-one will feed Saaheb after Badri dies, since none of the elder brothers have any care for their younger ones. When the brothers come to know that Saaheb has failed again, their venom comes out and they want Saaheb to find a job for himself but won't help him in finding anything.

Mr. Somnath (Suresh Chatwal), Saaheb's Football Coach encourages Saaheb to continue playing football. Eventually Saaheb is selected into the university team and his article is published in the papers.

Mr. Sharma arranges his daughter's marriage with a doctor (son of Badri's friend (Nitin Sethi)) who will be re-locating to London, U.K. The family requires Rs.70,000/- for the expenses and will even go to the extent of selling their house. None of the elder brothers have any means of coming up with money for the expenses (Amar offers 15K, Kamal offers 5k and the 3rd offers 3-4K at most). The 3rd one suggests postponing Geeta's wedding till the time they have more money. But Badri wants to get this done before he dies, and the wedding is on. Badri decides to sell the house to help with the wedding expenses. Saaheb can't see his father breaking down and selling ancestral house.

Two of them even scheme with their respective wives to take over the house. Kamal wants Sheila to loan them Rs 50K against the house as mortgaged. Badri won't be able to repay and that way the house would belong to their children only.Natasha offers to help by giving all her jewels to Saaheb and asking him to sell them off for Geeta's wedding. Saaheb is tearful but refuses Natasha's offer.

Mr. Sharma attempts to raise the money, in vain. Sunil then makes the ultimate sacrifice for the marriage of his sister and brings the money to his dad. Sunil had sold his kidney to a rich person SP Sinha (Pinchoo Kapoor), who wanted to save the life of his son. Tragically, Badri had seen the same newspaper ad and had called SP Sinha, but Sunil had already made a deal by then. SP Sinha's doctor (A.K. Hangal) knows Saaheb and tells him that he would never be able to play football if he gives away his kidney.

Sunil begs SP Sinha for a job in his company, so he can repay the 50K that SP Sinha has given him. Meanwhile Kamal and Sheila are busy convincing Badri to mortgage the house to Kamal's father-in-law.His dad believes that Sunil has stolen the money, and Sunil is forced to lie about where he got the money from. He says that his elder sister Shanti (Nandita Thakur) has given the money when she heard that Badri was thinking about selling the house. Shanti lives in Pune.Saaheb goes for the operation which is on the day of the wedding.

The family only finds out after the marriage ceremony is over (Shanti arrives the day after the wedding (her kids had exams) and informs everyone that she never gave any money to Saaheb), and do not hesitate to blame him. It is then Sujata who reveals the secret of how the money came to Sunil's possession (she found the newspaper ad and figured everything out).

Badri was standing in the hallway when Sujata was admonishing everyone for mistrusting Saaheb. Badri is teary eyed and doesn't know how to repay Saaheb for his ultimate sacrifice. Badri goes to meet Saaheb the next day and meets SP Sinha. Sinha has appointed Saaheb as a manager in his company and thanks Badri for such an honest son.
