Summaries

The term Conversation Piece, used to categorize an eighteenth century painting genre depicting social activities, evokes an aural dimension in a period where no audio-visual construct outside live theater was in existence. Through a series of four short films, the project asks how moving images and synchronized speech might re-constitute the Conversation Pieces of the eighteenth century today. The combination of mobile audio technologies and visual effects that suggest absence-such as blue-screen com positing-are used in place of painting. Each actor only appears in dialog with themselves. My own role as the conversation generator and stand-in on every set is effaced by the composite of the actor's double within each alternative camera pass.—Anonymous
