Synopsis

A goon named Hariya finds Vikram Rathore and his daughter at a hospital in Mumbai and calls his boss Baapji in Devgarh to inform him that Vikram is alive. Hariya is killed while he is on the phone with Baapji. Baapji and his men dig Vikram's grave in Devgarh and find it empty.Baapji's brutal brother Titla sends his goon Babu (Ashok Samarth) with an army to kill Vikram.

Shiva (Akshay Kumar) is a small-time thief in Mumbai who falls in love with Paro (Sonakshi Sinha) from Patna, who is in Mumbai to attend a marriage. Shiva makes his way into Paro's heart (after he saves her from being mugged on the streets), and she starts loving him. Shiva believes that kids are bad luck for him and hates them.Shiva tells Paro the truth about him being a thief and resolves to give up crime forever. But before that, he decides to swindle one last person for a large sum of money along with his con-friend 2G (Paresh Ganatra).A man named Jagdish (Raj Arjun) finds Shiva on the streets and calls him out as his brother. Jagdish is stuck by a car, and Shiva takes him to the hospital.

Shiva tricks a woman on a railway station (Gurdeep Kohli) and flees with a trunk in her possession. This leads Shiva to Chinki (Ananya Nayak), a girl who was in the trunk instead of the wealth he thought was there, who thinks that he is her father. Flummoxed by what is happening, Shiva is forced to keep Chinki with him as a police officer Vishal (Yashpal Sharma) finds Shiva with the trunk & keeps his eye on him. Chinki identifies Shiva as her father in front of the police officer.

After a few days, Shiva gets fed up with Chinki and breaks the tape recorder she uses to listen to her late mother's (Pooja Rawal) voice. The next morning, he learns that her mother died. Feeling guilty, he fixes the recorder and becomes fond of Chinki, taking care of her.Although he tries keeping Chinki away from Paro's eyes, the latter finds out about her. Angry and hurt, Paro leaves for Patna leaving Shiva heartbroken.

Soon, unknown goons attack him, taking him to be a latter named ASP Vikram Rathore (also Akshay Kumar), Chinki's real father. Rathore looks exactly like Shiva which had caused all the confusion. It is also shown that unknown assailants are desperately searching for Rathore to kill him. Rathore is suffering from some kind of mental injury that causes him to have a seizure & go unconscious for a few minutes every now & then. The only cure is to pour water on the head directly, which brings Rathore back to his senses.

One day, Shiva is spotted by the goons looking for Rathore. While many unknown persons, including the police officer (Yashpal Sharma) & the lady whom they defrauded at the railway station, help Shiva run to safety with Chinki in his arms, he is soon surrounded by the goons. It is revealed that Vikram is watching the whole thing from the top of a building. Just as Shiva is about to get stabbed, Vikram saves him and defeats the goons despite getting severely injured. At the hospital, Shiva realizes that the railway station woman is, in fact, a real police officer, Inspector Razia Khan (Gurdeep Kohli). The officers tell Shiva that the man who looks like him is Vikram and narrate the whole incident.

In a village Devgarh, a MLA, Baapji (Nassar) used to trouble, torture and annex money from people. Rathore was a new ASP in town & the police officer (Yashpal Sharma) & Razia Khan and Vishal are shown to be his deputies in Devgarh who join him in his fight against Baapji. Baapji's son Munna (Amit Tiwari) is sexually assaulting a police officer Vishal's wife. Rathore arrests Munna, but he is released when proven insane. Munna wants revenge & organizes a vulgar dance party with Rathor providing security. Vikram Rathore tricks Baapji's son Munna into killing himself by hanging himself from a tree by the belt of a humiliated inspector.

Rathore is then attacked by Baapji's brother Titla (Supreeth Reddy) on Dussehra where he is stabbed from the back as well as shot in the head while trying to save a village child and is assumed to be dead. He survives with a brain injury although the goons assumed that he was dead. While the police officers were getting ready to bury him, he started breathing, having survived. Everybody promised not to disclose this to anyone. The officers then took Vikram to Mumbai for treatment.Effects of this brain injury are later visible, and they are diminished by water falling on his head.

After Shiva hears the whole story, the doctors say that Vikram doesn't have much time left. Vikram requests Shiva to take care of Chinki. Shiva promises and says that Chinki is now his daughter. Vikram dies by holding Shiva's hand.Shiva then adopts Chinki, who does not know that her father is dead. Shiva returns to Devgarh posing as ASP Vikram Rathore and heads to settle the scores with Baapji. 2G tells Paro the truth and she forgives Shiva. Paro reaches Devgarh since she still loves Shiva (though he still refers to himself as Vikram Rathore). She reconciles with him and vows that she will also take care of Chinki.

Shiva, being a goon, handles Baapji well with tricks. He tells Baapji that he will rob his food store. Bappji assembles his private army at his warehouse. Then Shiva destroys Baapji's illegal liquor shop & then calls Bappji who goes after Shiva in rage. Then Shiva leads the villagers to now pillage the unprotected food warehouse.

A fight ensues in which he defeats all Baapji's men alone. In the end, he fights with Baapji and Titla on a rope bridge. Shiva ties the two to a rope and cuts it. Both fall to their deaths.

Shiva marries Paro, and they leave for a new life with Chinki and 2G.
