"Romance in the Dark" is a 1938 film directed by H. C. Potter and starring Gladys Swarthout, John Boles, John Barrymore, and Claire Dodd. It is one of five movies produced by Paramount in the 1930s featuring Gladys Swarthout, a popular Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano. The studio was attempting to build on the popularity of Grace Moore, another opera singer, who had also expanded her talents into movies.

A modern story around the Hungarian concert stage in Budapest finds a famous singer, Antal Kovach (John Boles) and his manager, noted impresario Zoltn Jason (John Barrymore), attending graduation exercises of a music class, in another city, conducted by Jason's brother. They meet Ilona Boris (Gladys Swarthout) and Kovach awards her a medal and politely asks her if she is ever in Budapest to look him up. She quickly arrives in Budapest, but her attempts to meet Kovach are futile. Kovach and Jason are feuding over the affection of Countess Monica Foldesay (Claire Dodd) and Kovach rents a summer home next to her estate. Ilona gets a job as Kovach's maid and as she is about to be sacked Kavach gets the idea that if he can pass her off on Jason and will have the summer free to woo Countess Monica.
