Two young women, though leading very different lives, discover they are quite similar in their afflictions. As the friendship develops between Sheng Lei, an aspiring singer in modern Beijing, and Dan Qing, a writer from Taiwan, stories of Sheng Lei's unsettling childhood begin to unfold. As Sheng Lei reflects upon her past, she realizes the importance of reconnecting with her paralyzed grandfather.
