Immigration defines the history of America. From the country's founding until today, many of those who have arrived at our borders have come to escape political, religious, ethnic, racial, and gender persecution. It is estimated that between a half-million and a million immigrants now living in the United States are survivors of torture, abuse and rape in their home countries. 'Refuge: Caring for Survivors of Torture' tells some of their stories, and profiles the dedicated staff of four programs, in different parts of the country, who provide health care, mental health, and rehabilitation services to torture survivors.—Anonymous
