Ram Lakhan is the story of two brothers who part ways due to their ideological differences, but how they come to each other's rescue as the story unfolds.
Sharda (Raakhee) vows vengeance when her husband is murdered by his two evil cousins, Bhishamber (Amrish Puri) and Bhanu (Paresh Rawal), and she and her two young sons are thrown out on the street. Those sons grow into the upstanding police officer Ram (Jackie Schroff) and the easily tempted dreamer Lakhan (Anil Kapoor). Honest and upright Thakur Pratab Singh lives in a spacious bungalow with his wife Sharda, two young sons Ram and Lakhan and his evil cousins Bhishambar and Bhanu. When the Thakur protests and refuse to let Bhishambar and Bhanu carry on there illegal activities he is ruthlessly beaten and let for dead on a train line. Here on Sharda swears to avenge her husband's death and brings up her two sons Ram and Lakhan in a poor environment. Years later Ram is now an honest police inspector while Lakhan is a play-boy always has a dream of hitting it rich. When Lakhan hears there is a reward for catching a smuggler Kesariya Vilayati he single-handily captures him and present him before the police commissioner. Impress with the way how Lakhan handles himself the commissioner decides to enroll Lakhan into the police force but Lakhan refuses to work honest and accepts bribe from Bhishambar and Bhanu to let off there criminal activities thus begins to create rifts between Ram and himself. Sharda vows to avenge the death of her husband, and hopes she will achieve this when her sons grow up and ultimately destroy their father's assailants, and it is then and then only will she disperse her husband's ashes. Years later, Ram is now the Police Inspector and is a major obstacle in Bhishamber's illegal activities. While Lakhan is the fun-loving, wanna be quick millionaire, precocious young man, still living in his brother's shadow. When Lakhan finds out that there is a big reward for the capture and arrest of notorious gangster Kesariya Vilayti, he single-handedly captures him and claims the reward. Thinking police work is quite simple and easy, he applies for the job, completes his training and also becomes a police inspector like his brother. Satisfied that her sons have chosen the right path, Sharda goes on a religious pilgrimage. When she returns she finds that nothing is the same anymore, Ram and Lakhan have quarreled and no longer speak with each other; Ram lives in a their older family home, while Lakhan has moved in to a spacious bungalow, supposedly bought through bribes. While Ram continues to create obstacles for Bhishamber, Lakhan has now joined Bhishamber's gang and is on their pay-roll. Sharda (Raakhee) is happily married in a rich aristocratic household to Thakur Pratap Singh (Dalip Tahil) and is the mother to two young boys. Thakur Pratap Singh's father shows mercy to his nephews Bhishamber (Amrish Puri) and Bhanu (Paresh Rawal) after they serve jail time for siphoning the family wealth and stealing within the household and whiling away their time - drinking and gambling. Thakur Sr (Lahiri Singh) allows them to stay at the Haveli for one month till they find their permanent dwelling. Bhishamber is married to Mrs. Bhishamber Nath (Lalita Kumari).. They have a son Debu (Anand Balraj)..Thakur Sr. is tricked by the family lawyer (who is in cahoots with Bhanu and Bhishamber) into signing a will (the will was written in English that Thakur Sr cant read) that deprives his son, daughter-in-law and two children from the ancestral wealth and the right to even live in the manor's premises. Post that Bhishamber gets Thankur Sr killed in a car accident.when the will is disclosed, out of the 105 acres, Pratap only gets 5 acres and a small hut on the ancestral property.. Kesariya Vilayati (Gulshan Grover) a.k.a. Badman is a partner with Bhanu, Bhishamber and the corrupt lawyer..
Sharda enters the main Haveli to get milk for Ram (who has a fever).. She finds some jewels lying around and was putting them away for safekeeping when Mrs Nath sees her and raises an alarm. Lakhan watches as Sharda is dragged by her hair by Bhishamber and humiliated in front of everyone. Pratap vows revenge.. Pratap overhears when the lawyer has a change of heart and admits to Bhanu, Bhishamber and Kesariya that the property indeed belongs to Pratap and that he duped Thakur Sr. Kesariya kills the lawyer to cover their tracks.Pratap is a witness and goes to the police, but is severely beaten up, stabbed brutally, and left on a nearby railway track to be cut to pieces by the next passing train, leaving behind his widowed wife Sharda, and two young sons, Ram and Lakhan.

She leaves town & talks about the day when her sons grow up and ultimately destroy their father's assailants, and it is then and then only that she will disperse her husband's ashes.
Years later, Ram (Jackie Shroff) is now the Police Inspector and is a major obstacle in Bhishamber's illegal activities, while Lakhan (Anil Kapoor) is the fun-loving, wanna-be quick millionaire, precocious young man, still living in his brother's shadow and mother's love for him.Bhanu & Bhishamber now run a smuggling operation under the guise of their trucking business (they have 4000 trucks), which is operated by Kesariya. Kesariya runs the smuggling in India for his international boss Sir John (Raza Murad). Bhanu and Bhishamber try to buy Ram out, but Sharda warns them that she will have her revenge..Lakhan woos his childhood sweetheart Radha (Madhuri Dixit) and deals with her stingy, eccentric but easily fooled and well-meaning father Deodhar Shastri (Anupam Kher).
Ram also has an affair with the Commissioner's Arun Kashyap (Saeed Jaffrey) daughter, Geeta (Dimple Kapadia) and is constantly teased by his younger brother for not coming out in the open with it. Debu has returned after studying in the US and now the Bhanu, Bhishamber, Kesariya trip live in the same town as Ram/Lakhan. One day Debu comes across Radha have a bath in the river and tries to force himself upon her, but Lakhan beats him up when Debu abuses Sharda.. Only Ram's intervention saves Debu's life.When Bhishamber finds out, he orders Deodhar for a wedding between Radha and Debu. But since Radha is a minor, the wedding is postponed for a yr. Now Sharda advises Lakhan to earn respect and win back Radha. Lakhan translates that to mean that he has to become rich.

Satisfied that her sons have chosen the right path, Sharda goes on a religious pilgrimage to pray for their unity. Lakhan start accepting bribes from Bhishamber's proxies and allows their trucks to pass without any inspections. As Bhishamber now starts trusting Lakhan he starts offering larger bribes to him for larger consignments.Eventually, Sir John's right hand Vivia (Sonika Gill), invites Lakhan for a meeting and wants him to get Kesariya released from prison in exchange for a rs 14 Lakh bribe. Ram suspects Lakhan of being on Bhishamber's payroll. Lakhan has hidden all the bribe money in Sharda's locker where she keeps her husbands ashes. Lakhan delivers a master key to Kesariya in the lockup, and helps him escape.
Later, Ram finds Lakhan dancing at Sir John's party. When Ram accuses Lakhan of having dis-proportionate assets, Lakhan tells Ram that he is jealous of his success. But now Radha wont marry Lakhan as she respects Ram and believes that Lakhan is corrupt.. Meanwhile Kesariya tells Lakhan that Ram is in the process of getting him suspended from police. This leads to an epic showdown between the brothers (Ram had gone to Lakhan's place to get back Sharda's locker, which Lakhan had taken with him when he shifted into his new bungalow).. Lakhan refuses to let Ram take the locker away and they end up fighting badly..
Now Lakhan is helping Sir John move goods worth rs 51 Crore and is getting rs 5 Crore as bribe for the same. But this time Lakhan asks for Radha as the bribe. Bhishamber agrees. The stuff has to be delivered in the old Haveli where Lakhan was born.. So, now Lakhan wants the Haveli in exchange for the job. John forces Bhishamber to sign a blank paper, but Bhishamber is livid..
When Sharda returns, she finds that nothing is the same anymore, Ram and Lakhan have quarreled and no longer speak with each other based on their ideological differences and because Lakhan uses his power to help smugglers and make extra money. Lakhan picks Sharda from the station, but when she finds all this, she goes to meet Ram. Sharda loses her temper when she finds that Lakhan had accumulated his bribe money in the locker where she had kept his dad's ashes.. Sharda is heartbroken that Bhanu and Bhishamber have managed to break apart her 2 weapons, who would have gotten her justice.This is the first time Ram and Lakhan realize what was inside that locker as before this, she had never allowed them both to open it.. Lakhan realizes that Bhanu and Bhishamber killed his father Pratap.
Lakhan is arrested by the CBI, but he escapes to fulfill the vow taken by her mother and goes to his ancestral Haveli. Sir John, Bhishamber and Bhanu know that CBI is after Lakhan and they capture him and beat him mercilessly. Lakhan also finds that Bhishamber has promised Radha to Sir John in marriage, to buy his support. Radha is also under Sir John's captivity.Sir John calls Ram to get his cocaine through the border in exchange for Lakhan's life. Ram helps Kesariya move the drugs through the border, after which Kesairya kills Ram. But Ram survives, gets into Kesariya's van and reaches the Haveli, where they have kept Lakhan.
meanwhile Deodhar and Sharda have also reached the Haveli and stall Sir John, till Ram arrives and attacks. Lakhan joins the fight and the brothers fight the evil forces together. Sir John orders the Haveli to be demolished with dynamite. Lakhan and Ram survive. Lakhan kills Sir John and Kesariya.. Ram and Lakhan trap Bhishamber on the same railway track where Pratap was killed and he is mowed down by an oncoming train.the brother immerse the ashes in Ganga. Ram marries Geeta and Lakhan marries Radha.
