Two friends live happily until misunderstandings arise between them.
Cabaret dancer and singer, Sheela (Zeenat Aman) has two admirers: small-time thief Rajesh (Feroz Khan) and eligible young widower Amar (Vinod Khanna). They are best friends and don't realize that they love the same woman. Then an enemy in the guise of Vikram Singh (Shakti Kapoor) appears and makes both men's lives miserable by exposing their realities to each other, turning their friendship upside-down. Rajesh is blamed for Rakka's (Amrish Puri) death and is sentenced to be jailed for a lifetime. While Amar, Sheela, and his small daughter escape to the U.K. with a lot of diamonds and money stolen by Rajesh. Rajesh is an expert safecracker who escapes with the stolen loot. He shares a romantic relationship with young cabaret dancer Sheela. One day Rajesh is caught by inspector Khan with the loot and imprisoned; there he meets Vikram, who offers him a contract to kill underworld don Rakka for a fee. Rakesh accepts the contract and the fee, but Sheela convinces him to give up crime. Then Rajesh meets and befriends widower Amar, and they plan a double heist in which they will rob a safe of millions; Rajesh will get caught and get a year and a half in prison; after that the two friends will settle down in a corner with the money. Rajesh is a thief in love with club singer Sheela who is unaware that he is a thief. Inspector Khan gets hold of Rajesh and puts him behind bars where Rajesh meets Vikram. Vikram and his sister Jwala were conned by Raka. While in jail, Vikram plans his revenge and asks Rajesh's help. In Rajesh's absence, Sheela finds solace with widower Amar and his daughter Tina. Rajesh meets Vikram, who reminds him about his revenge with Raka. Amar enters the scene and fights with Vikram. Rajesh and Amar turn friends and Rajesh suspects Sheela and Amar. Feroz Khan plays a thief named Rajesh who is blackmailed by villain Vikram and his evil sister Jwala into stealing from crime boss Rakka. Jwala is Rakka's ex-wife and has been cheated by Rakka, who has stolen her fortune and divorced her. Jwala wants revenge and will stop at nothing to get it. If Rajesh does not do the job, Vikram will kill Rajesh's cabaret-dancer lover Sheela and also Rajesh's best friend Amar's daughter Tina. In an unusual tribute, Feroz Khan sends his condolences to Indira Gandhi on the death of her son Sanjay Gandhi. Feroz calls Sanjay, a prince whom he never met, but salutes. He dedicates the proceeds of the movie from Bangalore and Delhi to the memory of the "sleeping prince".
Rajesh (Feroz Khan) was a motorcycle stuntman in a circus and is now a thief, expert in breaking open treasuries. Joe (Kader Khan) is Rajesh's partner in crime. Joe is moving to London and asks Rajesh to him a share from a heist, which he does.
In one such robbery, he is being watched by a jolly but shrewd police inspector Amjad Khan (Amjad Khan). Sheela (Zeenat Aman) is a gorgeous disco club dancer and singer. Rajesh and Sheela are in love. Rajesh has not disclosed to Sheela that he is a thief. Rajesh asks Sheela not to sing at the disco anymore as male customers leer at her and later proposition her for sex.
An evil brother-sister duo, Vikram (Shakti Kapoor) and Jwaala (Aruna Irani) seek revenge against crime boss Rakka (Amrish Puri), who cheated Jwaala and siphoned her money. Rakka seduced Jwaala and married her and took control of her estate. Then Rakka sent her brother Vikram to jail by fabricating an attempt to kill himself.Rakka was being extremely rude and arrogant to a beggar at a parking lot, when Rajesh sees him. To teach Rakka a lesson, Rajesh destroys his Mercedes sedan.
Inspector Amjad Khan had arrested Rajesh for car theft after he is seen by a traffic police officer at a traffic accident. When the officer asked Rajesh for the papers of the car, he fled the scene, but the officer noted down his car details and makes a sketch made of him. The officer also finds out that a safe was robbed in the vicinity when he had seen Rajesh.
The court sentences Rajesh to 3.5 years' imprisonment. Sheela is devastated after she realizes Rajesh was a thief. Vikram meets Rajesh in jail.
Meanwhile, Amar (Vinod Khanna) is an ace crime member in Rakka's gang who revolts against Rakka.Amar and his colleague Mac (Mac Mohan) were smuggling gold for Rakka. Amar was in a car inside the truck. Amjad was working on a tip that told him exactly which truck was being used to transport the gold and by which route. As Amar escapes in the car with the gold (while wearing a mask), Mac tries to run away on foot, but Rakka has him shot from a helicopter.Amar revolts against Rakka as Rakka decided to protect himself rather than trying to save the gang member.Amar knew Mac had served Rakka loyally for years and now he wanted to start a family after finishing this last job for Rakka.
Amar is a widower with a daughter Tina (Natasha Chopra) studying in a boarding school. However, before quitting Rakka's gang, However, unfortunately for Amar, inspector Amjad Khan is investigating the case where Amar escaped while smuggling gold for Rakka, wearing a mask.
Amar saves Sheela from a gang of rowdy bikers at a roadside cafe owned by Mohammed Ali (Jagdeep). They start meeting regularly as Sheela likes Amar's daughter Tina. Soon, Amar begins to love Sheela, who does not reciprocate because she still loves Rajesh. After a short time, Amar and Sheela get together.
Rajesh completes his jail sentence and re-unites with Sheela. While returning, he meets Vikram who again reminds him of the deal to rob Rakka (Vikram and Jawala ask Rajesh to steal 1 Crore of jewels from Rakka's safe). Amar incidentally reaches the site where Vikram and Rajesh are having a conversation in the middle of the road, and a fist fight ensues between Amar and Vikram. While fleeing, Vikram swears revenge against Amar. Thus, Rajesh and Amar meet for the first time. Rajesh is thankful to Amar for fighting Vikram as Sheela doesn't want Rajesh to steal for Vikram.
Rajesh takes Amar to introduce to Sheela; Sheela and Amar pretend as if they do not know each other since they don't want Rajesh to unnecessarily suspect them. Amar is angry at Sheela for misguiding him, but Sheela tells Amar that she loves Rajesh
Later, Vikram's goons kidnap Amar's daughter and beat Amar, who is hospitalized. In return for Amar and his daughter's safety, Rajesh agrees to do Vikram's job. He nurses Amar back to normal and soon they turn thick friends (Amar believes Rajesh has saved his life twice now). Amar promises Rajesh, he will support him in this one last robbery for Vikram against Rakka.
They plan to shift to London after the robbery with the money. They concoct a scheme whereby Amar would steal gold bars and jewelry from a random safe, phone the police, let Rajesh take over, get arrested, and get a prison term for about 12 to 18 months. After his release, he will join Amar in the UK. But this after Rajesh has stolen the jewels from Rakka's safe. This way Rajesh will never be suspected of stealing the jewels from Rakka, since he was at the other robbery.
Things don't go according to plan as Rajesh gets arrested for killing Rakka, while Amar and Sheela reach London with the money. Basically, the random apartment selected by Amar, belonged to Rakka also, and Jwaala had attacked Rakka before Amar had arrived and kills him with a pistol. Amjad reaches the apartment and finds Rajesh along with Rakka's dead boy hidden behind the aquarium.
Rajesh construes that Amar deliberately framed him so that he can get Rajesh out of the way, keep all the money (as well as Sheela) for himself. Rajesh escapes from jail and reaches London to apprehend Amar. After a brief tussle, Rajesh realizes the truth and that Amar did not frame him.
Vikram and his goons reach London to take revenge against Rajesh and Amar. They track down Rajesh and Amar, who are on the run from Amjad. In the climax of the movie in an industrial warehouse, Amar sacrifices his life to save Rajesh, Sheela and Tina from getting killed by Vikram. Amjad leaves Rajesh and allows him to start a new life.
