This look at the psychology of drag examines the skills needed for men to transform themselves into women and the interaction between performers and audience. Filmed on location in Portland, Oregon at a legendary nightclub.
Queens of Heart brings to the screen the fabulous complexity of drag dhows and their characters who dance into our psyches. Darcelle XV is the longest-running drag club in the United States and an Oregon institution. A bachelorette night visit to the club has become a rite of passage for women throughout the Pacific Northwest celebrating their 'last night out.' The proprietor, seventy-five year old Darcelle, performer and community activist, comforts and confronts her audiences, from the brides gone wild and their nervous male companions, to gays and lesbians celebrating a step towards coming out, to older women recovering from an illness or divorce. Her sassily dispensed bon mots bring audiences together reminding us that although we may look different, a good laugh is universal.
