Synopsis

Muskaan (Kajol) is an orphan girl living on a farm run by her overly protective older brother, Vishal (Arbaaz Khan) and their 'Chachu' Ajay Singh Thakur (Dharmendra). Cook is Tadkalal (Ashok Saraf). Vishal rejects all marriage proposals for Muskaan, saying that none of the guys are suitable for her. Vishal is the serious, no-nonsense type of person and has a hot temper. He cannot stand anyone misbehaving with Muskaan, whom he calls Bachchi.

Muskaan's childhood friend, Ujaala (Anjala Zaveri), has been carrying a torch for the brooding Vishal since childhood, but he won't give her the time of day.Vishal would beat up any person who troubles Muskaan in the village.

Later on, Muskaan decides she wants to go to a university in Mumbai and has to persuade her brother (on Rakhi) to let her go. Vishal is reminded of his promise to his father who told him to complete Muskaan's every wish. His mother had told him not to let Muskaan feel the loss of her parents, as she has no one other then her brothers. Vishal agrees and Muskaan is super happy.

Principal (Tiku Talsania) of the college is aware of Muskaan's Chachu's reputation. Vishal complains to the principal about the lack of morals at the college, with girls wearing skimpy clothes and flirting with guys, guys wearing jewelry and so on. The principal says that even he had a sister whom he loved beyond reason. But one day, she loved another guy, got married and left her brother behind.

Once in the big city, Suraj (Salman Khan), an underachieving student (who is in his final year at college), who does not get along with his stepmother Mrs. Khanna (Kunika) and is estranged from his father Akash Khanna (Kiran Kumar), falls in love with Muskaan.Suraj is angry as he is accused of theft of a Rs 25 Lakh necklace by his stepmom and his dad supports her. Suraj leaves house and now only gets a (big fat) monthly allowance from his dad.

Suraj makes a few attempts at messing with Muskaan. He steals her bag and makes her chase him all over college. To impress Muskaan by winning a cricket match, he bribes the entire opposition team, but she finds out. Suraj tries to get her attention, and finally succeeds.

Muskaan finds out about Suraj's personal life and feels sorry for him.Muskaan is excited that many Bollywood film stars are attending the college's annual festival. Actually, duplicates were coming, but since Muskaan is a big fan, he tells her that real stars are coming and promises to introduce Muskaan to them.Suraj assembles a cast of movie star duplicates for the college annual function to impress Muskaan. But he is caught when the duplicates start fighting among themselves and the Principal plans to suspend him. The principal summons Suraj's parents to the college for a discussion.Muskaan falls in love with him, and she bails Suraj out by posing as his rich stepmom and castigating the principal for troubling him.

Meanwhile, Ajay and Vishal fight off some goons who try to take possession of their farmland. Turns out a local merchant Gajraj and his son (Aasif Sheikh) claim that Ajay's elder brother had sold the property to Gajraj 15 years ago. Ajay rejects their claim for want of any proof and the Panchayat votes in favor of Ajay.

One day, when Vishal comes to visit Muskaan, he is mistakenly considered her boyfriend by Suraj and his group of friends. Vishal gives Muskaan a red rose, which was actually a gift from Ujaala. But this was rose day, and when Suraj sees this, he assumes Vishal is Muskaan's boyfriend.They consequently try to fight Vishal but are instead beaten up. Vishal decides to bring Muskaan back to the farm sensing Suraj's bad influence on her studies.Muskaan is crestfallen that for the first time in her life she made good friends, and Vishal thrashed them as well. Vishal says that she was sent to the city to study and not to make friends.

Suraj takes the same bus as Vishal and Muskaan (by riding on the roof and reaches her village).Suraj later learns from Muskaan that Vishal is her brother, and he apologizes to Muskaan and Vishal for beating him up. But Vishal does not like Suraj because his terms and conditions of his future brother-in-law are very strenuous physically and he thinks Suraj is neither competent nor a man to be taken seriously.

Suraj pursues her and begins to work on the farm as a stable boy after a chance meeting with 'Chachu' in which he saves Chachu's life (His jeep had an accident on the road, after barely missing a rampaging truck). Vishal gives Suraj another chance and puts him to the test (Gets him to cook food, sleeping in the stables, taming a wild horse); however, he is rejected.

Suraj disguises himself and poses as a suitor for Ujaala to get Vishal to throw him out and admit that he loves Ujaala.Vishal wants Muskaan to marry Thakur Vijay Singh (Nirmal Pandey), not knowing that Thakur Vijay Singh is doing this to merely exact vengeance against the Thakur family for humiliation to Gajraj Singh. Vijay had saved Vishal from an attack from Gajraj's son, and Vishal was indebted to him, without knowing that this was a plan and Vijay was related to Gajraj.

Eventually Vishal finds them to together and realizes the truth and the big mistake he was going to make. Meanwhile Suraj calls his parents to meet Ajay and Vishal.

Suraj has to win Vishal's heart if he is really interested in marrying Muskaan. Chachu is half-shocked to know the reason why Suraj came to this village. Suraj's family comes. Suraj's stepmother insults Muskaan (Saying that he has fixed Suraj's engagement with a big business family and making fun of Muskaan's family), who runs away but she accidentally runs into the Singh family and their henchmen.

Suraj, Suraj's father, Vishal and his Chachu arrive and rescue Muskaan. Despite injuries, Suraj's stepmother calls the Police because she now cares about Suraj. Vishal accepts Suraj as his future brother-in-law.
