Uldis goes to marry rich landlady's daughter Zane but he sees orphan Baiba in her backyard and falls in love with her. The restrained Baiba also loves Uldis but cannot become happy if Zane, Gatins and Orta suffers.

Movie takes look at ancient time when hero Uldis arrives as a suitor for landlady's daughter Zane. Baiba is a servant at home and during stormy night Uldis meets Baiba. He immediately desires her, but gets rejected. Uldis, angry about the failure to get what he wants, continues to persuade Zanes mother to agree to marriage.
