Learning they are hiring domestic servants, seventeen year old Ellen Neal goes to the home of wealthy Perry and Maggie Winfield in suburban New York City. Ruling over the servants with an iron fist including taking advantage of them to make himself well off, Wroxton, the head butler, hires her despite there being no official opening anymore and despite she having no experience as a servant. He hires her because she's young, pretty and bright, but mostly because he's attracted to her. Ellen ends up also impressing Mrs. Winfield who reassigns her to be her personal maid. Home from college for the summer between his junior and senior years, Richard Winfield, the Winfields' only son, is attracted to Ellen upon first sight, unaware until later in their first conversation that she is one of their servants. Thus begins Ellen's struggle between three masters: Wroxton, head of the servants, who controls what happens to them, he who eventually admits to wanting to marry her; Dick, who loves her and also wants to marry her, while Ellen can more clearly see the complications of doing so despite loving him in return; and Mrs. Winfield, who is fond of Ellen as a maid, but may view her differently as potential daughter-in-law material.—Huggo
