Synopsis

Meet Larry. After living nearly 60 years with a burdensome secret only his parents and wife knew, he knows he can no longer live a lie. Despite his decades-long marriage, successful legal career and church leadership role, his real identity can no longer remain hidden.

At birth, doctors told his parents to choose their child's sex since it could not be physiologically-determined. Growing up in California's sunny suburbs, Larry was an all-American kid forced to hide his deep dark secret. As his parents struggled to decide their only child's fate, Larry briefly lived in the space between - as a boy and a girl. Mom wanted to raise their child as Lisa, but Dad objected. Then, against their 5-year-olds will, his parents elected sex assignment surgery, sealing his fate as a boy, and beginning his lifetime of struggle and pain.

Watch as Larry overcomes a lifetime of being told he couldn't be who he wanted to be. Hear his memories of roughhousing with the neighborhood boys when he wanted to play dolls with the girl next door. And feel his pain at playing football when in his heart he wanted to be a cheerleader. Imagine yourself in his place, getting married instead of pursuing your true desires.

At the center of Larry's struggles is a reconciliation of his love for God with an unwelcoming, hostile church. As a trained Pastor, Larry was a respected member of his church, one people turned to for guidance and compassion. What will happen when he walks into his familiar church as Lisa.

The film immerses viewers in the daunting challenges of Larry's day to day experiences beginning to live as Lisa when he could no longer take his male identity for granted. For the first time as a dedicated and respected legal professional, Larry risks unemployment and humiliation when seeking permission from his employer to reveal his emerging female identity.

For many years, Larry acquiesced to his parents wishes and promised he would never reveal his secret, never let anybody know who he really is. He was willing to hide Lisa and conform in a society that doesn't accept his true self. As he lives the typical suburban lifestyle- house, career, family, church he is forced to deny his very essence and ultimately has to choose: set himself free or face a total loss of self.

Our film centers on Larry's struggle to reclaim his stolen, hidden female identity. There was no denying the many times he dressed up in his confused wife's clothing in his bedroom closet to experience the pleasure of being Lisa for a few stolen moments. As his marriage struggles mount, tension builds until Larry sees an ad for the AIDS/Lifecycle charity ride, presenting the perfect escape.

Witness Larry training for the epic 545-mile-ride across California, a symbol of his personal journey. Witness his first tentative steps out of the closet and his determination to face a confused and skeptical world. Ultimately the price of true selfhood is almost overwhelming. With everything he has, Larry fights to complete the emotional ride, answering the question of whether to finally live the life he cherished for a brief flash so many years ago as Lisa.
