Synopsis

Two months after the events of Haseen Dillruba, Rani (Taapsee Pannu) is living in Agra, running a beauty parlor, while Rishu (Vikrant Massey), now using the alias Ravi, works as a delivery boy with a prosthetic hand. Rishu also takes other odd jobs such as fixing appliances and teaching tuition classes to earn money.Though living separately to avoid detection, they stay in touch by phone and plan to escape to Thailand in two months. The couple is meticulous about saving money, which they use to buy their tickets for Thailand. The agent says that arranging the fake passports will require 2 months.In news, Hathni Kund Barrage has broken down due to heavy rains, releasing a large number of crocodiles into the Yamuna River heading towards UP and have reached Agra.

Abhimanyu (Sunny Kaushal), Rani's landlady's physician, has shown romantic interest in her, which she doesn't reciprocate, while Rishu's landlady, Poonam (Bhumika Dube) (who had a prosthetic leg), has made explicit advances towards him, which he also rejects. Poonam wants a one-night stand and a fling and is not looking for love. Abhimanyu is a Compounder and has knowledge of basic medicine and human anatomy.Rani had agreed to go with Abhimanyu to the movies, and in excitement he bought all tickets to the balcony, so they could have privacy. But that night Rani's landlord Rajesh Khanna (Ambrish Kumar Saxena) and landlady Leela Khanna (Sapana Paritosh Sand) went to a spices convention and the house was empty. So, Rani invited Rishu for a night of sex and completely forgot about Abhimanyu. Abhimanyu resents that Rani had not thought for him.

A.C.P Kishore Rawat (Aditya Srivastava) and Senior Inspector Manav Shukla (Saanand Verma), now in Agra, visits Rani and reveals he knows she and Rishu are responsible for Neel's murder, having read the book that inspired their cover-up.Rishu and Rani get ever more vigilant and stop calling and meeting each other. Rishu calls Rani to a public phone booth and calls her from another phone booth to say that Kishore does not have any evidence and that she should remain strong even if the police call her in for interrogation.

Mritunjay "Monty" Paswan (Jimmy Sheirgill), Neel's uncle, is leading the investigation and is determined to prove Rani and Rishu's guilt out of vengeance. Monty finds that in the past few months, Rani had talked the most with a man registered as Naitik Verma against the SIM issued. Rani claims that Naitik was a friend and she stopped talking to him after his wife complained. Monty also finds that "Naitik" had been calling a travel agent frequently. Monty is sure that Naitik is Rishu. Monty quickly captures Rishu's travel agent (Pramod Rana), foiling their escape plans.

A.C.P. Rawat also questions Poonam about Rishu, but she doesn't confirm their suspicions. Panicked, Rani decides to marry Abhimanyu to divert suspicion, to which Rishu begrudgingly agrees. Rani proposes to Abhimanyu, but only on the condition that they can't fall in love. Despite his shock, he accepts and the two get married.

Rani and Abhimanyu maintain a platonic relationship after their marriage. Abhimanyu, who lost his parents, and later his uncle and aunt at young ages, reveals that his love for Rani kept him from ending his life. Abhimanyu and Rani live their life together, and Abhimanyu dreams of getting physically intimate with Rani.One day, Rani observes Poonam's home from a distance (from her usual spot form which she can see into Rishu's room) and sees that Poonam is trying to kiss Rishu. Rani is heartbroken and leaves. Rishu pushes Poonam back, but this part Rani does not see. Rishu runs after Rani, and they meet in a butcher shop where Rani accuses Rishu of leading Poonam on. Rishu reminds Rani that he sacrificed his own hand for her love and would not hesitate to sacrifice his own life.

That night, a drunk Rani accidentally reveals the truth about using their marriage to hide Rishu's existence. Wanting Rani to be happy, Abhimanyu agrees to help them escape and hides Rishu in his clinic. Abhimanyu tells Rishu that he is helping Rani as he hopes that one day she would love him over Rishu.Poonam follows Rishu to the clinic, but Rishu promises that he would visit her at her house to get her to go away. When Abhimanyu finds out, he proposes that Rishu can go with Poonam, and he will get Rani. When Rishu reacts, Abhimanyu claims that he was joking. Abhimanyu also finds that his associate Lallan came to the clinic in his absence and Rishu opened the door for him.

Abhimanyu later confesses to Rishu that he killed his uncle and aunt, and their two children, as revenge for cheating his father out of his business. Frightened, Rishu attacks Abhimanyu, who locks him in, but Rishu eventually escapes.

The night before Rani and Rishu's planned escape, Abhimanyu reveals his psychopathic tendencies to Rani and attacks her. She flees to the police for help and says that Abhimanyu confessed to her about killing his uncle, aunt and their 2 kids. Rani admits to Monty that Rishu is alive and is in danger from Abhimanyu.Shortly after, a burning van with two charred bodies is found, identified as Poonam and Abhimanyu, leading to Rani's arrest. To draw Rishu out, the police publicize Rani's mistreatment in custody, which works. Rishu uploads a video agreeing to surrender if they release Rani at a railway bridge, allowing them a final moment together. Monty agrees.

At the bridge, surrounded by police, Rishu and Rani reconcile. However, a police officer approaches, revealed to be Abhimanyu in disguise. Abhimanyu attempts to kill Rani for betraying him. He and Rishu struggle, leading all three to fall into the crocodile-infested river below. No bodies are found, and they are presumed dead.

Monty, however, continues investigating and discovers two key facts: Lallan (Gautam Shanathappa Gadaballi), an associate of Abhimanyu's, and Poonam visited Rishu the day Abhimanyu hid him, suggesting that Abhimanyu's body might actually be Lallan's. Monty believes that Lallan was the one who supplied the snake to Abhimanyu, who killed his uncle's family, and now was blackmailing him.Rishu entered Rani and Abhimanyu's house the night Rani turned herself in, with Rani leaving for the police station two hours later. Monty concludes that the events at the bridge were orchestrated.

Flashbacks reveal that after Rishu arrived at Abhimanyu's house, the three decided to work together to evade the police. Abhimanyu kills Poonam and Lallan as they are key witnesses. He also uses it as an opportunity to fake his own death. They then used Rishu's demand to surrender at the bridge to stage their escape.Unbeknownst to Rani, Abhimanyu removed Rishu's prosthetic arm underwater during their escape, rendering him unable to swim and leaving him to be attacked by a crocodile. Rani and Abhimanyu make it out of the river alive. Rishu is presumed dead, leaving Rani heartbroken.

Six months later, Rani and Abhimanyu are living in the village of Deosar. Rani is a teacher while Abhimanyu runs a clinic. In letters, Rani invites Abhimanyu and Monty to a cliff-side. Monty was delivered the latest Dinesh Pandit novel that outlined the plan used by Rishu and Abhimanyu to lure the crocodiles away from the railway bridge by feeding them meat about 2 Kms away from the bridge.

Confronting Abhimanyu, she reveals that she knows he killed Rishu to remove him from her life, before jumping off the cliff into the river below. Monty then arrests Abhimanyu. In a final twist, flashbacks reveal that Rishu survived the crocodile attack, later reuniting with Rani and telling her the truth. Rani survives her fall, and escapes with Rishu.
