Synopsis

High school senior Eric Matthews (Derek Rydall) sneaks his girlfriend, Melody Austin (Kari Whitman), into his house late at night to find a letter from land developers demanding that his parents sell their home to make way for a new shopping mall. He crumples up the letter up and they go to his room.

A year later, Mayor Karen Wilton (Morgan Fairchild) and mall owner Harv Posner (Jonathan Goldsmith) open up the first wing of the new mall. Posner announces a black-tie investor party to be held on the Fourth of July. Unknown to them, Eric, wearing a partial mask made from a mannequin's face, is watching from a ventilation shaft.

Melody Austin and her friends, Suzie (Kimber Sissons) and "Buzz" (Pauly Shore) are hired to work at the mall. The two girls are asked to pose with the mayor for publicity shots and photographer, Peter Baldwin (Rob Estes), instantly falls in love with Melody, and reveals that he photographed her the night Eric's house burned down. She recalls seeing the arsonist, who was wearing a religious medal as an earring. Melody told police, but they did not believe her.

Melody opens her work locker to find a bouquet of orchids. Melody tells Peter Baldwin that Eric bought her orchids the last night he was alive. Later, Harv Posner orders his security guards, Devon (John Walter Davis) and Arcardi (Ken Foree), to check the air ducts because he thought he heard rats. Arcardi pulls rank and the task falls to Devon. As Devon passes Melody, he asks if she wants to "pull his chain," unaware Eric is watching.

On the loading dock, Eric runs over Devon with a forklift. Harv is in his office when Devon's corpse drops onto his desk from an air conditioning vent. A note pinned to the body reads: "An eye for an eye."

That night, in the mall's parking garage, Melody cannot get her car started. As she looks under the hood, a masked man attacks her. An arrow strikes the attacker in the shoulder and he flees. The next day, Harv informs Arcardi that Devon has been fired and Christopher Volker (Gregory Scott Cummins), a man wearing a religious medal earring, will replace him.

Peter Baldwin spots Harv in a record store and snaps a photograph of him. Christopher Volker chases the photographer, but Peter gets away. When he shows the photograph to Melody, she confirms the man is the arsonist who torched Eric's house.

In the dress store where Suzie works, Justin Posner (Tom Fridley), the mall owner's son, accosts her and demands a kiss. Harv arrives and orders Justin to vacate the premises. As he goes, Justin spots an unattended skateboard and steals it.

That night, Justin skateboards through the empty mall, when a lasso drops around his neck. Eric attaches it to an escalator, that drags Justin and strangles him.

In the parking garage, Melody reveals that she and Eric where making love when the fire started. Eric threw her out the window and went back into the inferno to save his parents. She was stunned from the fall, but remembers Christopher Volker dousing her with gasoline. The arsonist ran away when he heard approaching sirens. Peter explains that Volker is not listed as a mall employee and indicates that Harv Posner used Volker to kill the Matthews in order to claim their land. Melody wonders if Eric is truly dead, and Peter insists they must exhume his body. Before they can leave, Volker appears with a pistol. Peter blinds him with his camera flash and drives off. Volker follows. Eric leaps on the car roof, and Volker loses control of his car, smashing into a pile of sand. Volker finds Harv, who orders him to kill Melody.

Eric returns to this hideout in the furnace room and plants a bomb.

Peter Baldwin digs up Eric's grave and finds it empty.

The next day, Melody is on the telephone with Peter when Volker knocks her unconscious and drags her to the loading dock. He is about to place her in a garbage compacter, when Eric appears and the two fight. Eric shoves Volker's head into the compactor. Eric takes Melody to a storage room. When she revives, he explains he has been hiding in the mall, waiting for his revenge. She removes his mask to reveal his fire damaged face. Although Melody expresses gratitude that Eric has been watching over her, she gently explains they cannot be together. A distraught Eric crawls to the furnace room and activates the bomb. Peter Baldwin sees Eric and follows him back to Melody where the two fight. Eric is distracted when Melody calls out that she loves Peter, allowing the photographer to knock Eric out. Above them, the mall fills with local dignitaries for the investors' party.

Buzz and Suzie sneak into the security room and spot an open-air duct with Melody's keys. Buzz insists they go into the duct to find Melody. Peter and Melody run into Buzz and Suzie and warn about the bomb. Once out of the vents, Suzie and Buzz steal a motorcycle and sidecar display to ride back to the security room. Peter and Melody find Mayor Wilton, and tell her everything. The mayor pulls a pistol and marches them to Harv's office. There, the mayor confesses she is part owner of the mall and was in on the Matthews murders. Eric leaps from a vent, and tosses the mayor through a window. Melody runs from the office and crawls onto the girders holding up the mall roof.

As the crowd below stares in wonder at Eric pursuing Melody on the steel work, they hear Buzz's voice on the public address system warning them to vacant the building. Melody climbs down a beam to Peter just as Eric spies Harv. Swinging down on a mall banner, Eric sends Posner crashing through the window of a fuel store. He grabs a nearby flamethrower and sets Posner ablaze. Posner falls into a pile of propane canisters, which explode. Buzz and Suzie arrive with the motorcycle. Peter and Melody hop on and Buzz crashes through the front doors just as the bomb explodes, destroying the entire mall. Peter tells Melody he loves her, and they embrace.
