A squad of soldiers must protect the human race from the supernatural.
In ancient times, a ship captain has an artifact at sea and proceeds to open it. The artifact is struck by lightening and a paranormal force comes out that possesses his crew. The crew kills the captain, and an unseen force destroys the entire ship in a huge explosion. The artifact sinks to the bottom of the sea.
In the modern age, the artifact is picked up by a US submarine named USS Venture. Meanwhile a hostage situation develops at a chemical plant in Moscow. The terrorists are after canisters of poison gas, which are locked behind an impregnable vault. Russian SWAT team attacks before the terrorists can blow the vault.Mark Dupree (Richard Grieco) leads the SWAT team that kills all the terrorists. He finds that 6 canisters had recently been transported out of the plant just 30 mins ago. He correctly deduces that the attack on the plant was a mere diversion, as the shipment is hijacked.
Jack Bavaro (Nigel Bennett) recruits Mark into Phantom force to fight the paranormal. Mark admits that he has some minor psychic abilities. Jack talks about the artifact and says that it is the stone of Hades, carved during the making of the Parthenon. A Greek warlord stole it and the artifact was lost into the Aegean sea, when the warlord crossed it. The stone of Hades is the mouth to hell and can bring forth an endless army of demon warriors to earth.Jack says that USS Venture is a research submarine that picked up a seismic disturbance in the Aegean 6 hours ago. It reported picking up an object and then went offline 5 hours ago. Since then, 2 freight ships have been sunk. An attack sub has been dispatched to sink the USS Venture
Jack wants Mark to bring back the stone. The attack sub is destroyed. Jack assigns researcher Rebecca Weaver (Jenna Gering) to Mark to teach him to control his abilities. Mark tells her that as a psychic he can see people who are going to be killed and how. Jack also recruits Ivan Cutler (Jim Fyfe) into the team. Cutler is working on EKD generators, that can confine paranormal entities. Joe Murray (Tyrone Pinkham) handles weapons. Potts (Tangi Miller) is a homicide detective. Kyle Hudson (Atanas Srebrev) is an expert diver.Commander Vukorov (Hristo Shopov) is also preparing to retrieve the stone for himself. Vukorov was shown as responsible for the attack on the chemical plant and the theft of 6 poison canisters.
The mission launches with Hudson taking the team into the Aegean sea using 2 person diving pods. The pods come under attack from torpedoes fired by the Venture. The pods manage to evade the attacks. They cross an Ecto-kinetic field around the submarine where all pods lose power.The pods locate the submarine's docking area and are able to enter it as paranormal forces have converted the ship into another dimension, different from 3 D matter. Once in, Cutler starts his EKD generator which is supposed to match the dimensions of living tissue to the paranormal dimensions. Once the dimensions are matched, the ship appears as regular to the 6 people on the team. Murray arms everyone with particle guns to shoot any ghosts or demons they encounter. Nitrogen vapor bombs to flash freeze the ghosts.
The team finds dead bodies across a largely empty submarine. Mark can sense how they died, in the attack from demons who took over the sub. The Venture is a nuclear sub. The team gets to the command section, which has no power. Murray warns everyone not to mess with the reactor on the sub, as it may go critical. Mark also reveals that the explosion might damage the Hades stone and open a gate to hell that might never close.Hudson is trapped inside the medical room alone. The entire equipment comes alive and starts attacking Hudson and he is killed.
Meanwhile Vukorov meets Jack and says that he knows that Jack has put a team on the sub to retrieve the stone. Jack offers to release the stone to Vukorov, for the payment of a royal ransom. Vukorov continues to assemble his forces on land in Macedonia, near the Aegean sea.On the sub, the team finally finds the Hades stone next to the nuclear reactor. Seems like the stone is drawing power from the reactor. The stone charges and releases a new batch of demons inside the reactor room that attack the team.The team manages to fend off the attack, but Rebecca dies when the flash grenade goes off on her person. It was activated automatically, without any physical trigger. The team starts to suspect Cutler for the deaths.
Meanwhile the EKD generator is failing, so Cutler stays behind while the remaining survivors leave the ship in their pods. Cutler tries to reset the generator, while under attack from demons and another attack sub, that is targeting the Venture. Cutler dies as the torpedo hits the Venture.Jack evacuates the survivors.Jack brings the stone to Vukorov, who betrays him and holds everyone captive. Vukorov plans to activate the stone and use the poison gas canisters to control it. But the gas in unstable and opens a portal to hell and the stone releases another batch of demons on Earth. Vukorov and Jack's teams unite to fight the demons and Mark basically fires at the Hades stone to destroy it with a missile. The portal closes, but Vukorov dies. The survivors escape.
