Peter Rabbit and his relatives live in the country and spend much of their time trying to steal food from Mr. McGregor's vegetable garden. Then Mr. McGregor dies, and the rabbits, and all the nearby wildlife, have the run of Mr. McGregor's garden and house. This fun and freedom is short-lived, as Mr. McGregor's nephew, Thomas, inherits the property and moves in. He will prove to be as deadly an enemy as his uncle.—grantss
In England's Lake District Peter Rabbit (James Corden), his cousin Benjamin (Colin Moody), and his triplet sisters Flopsy (Margot Robbie), Mopsy (Elizabeth Debicki) and Cottontail (Daisy Ridley), spend most of their days picking on Mr. McGregor (Sam Neill) and stealing vegetables from his garden.Peter does most of the work, while the others act as lookout and guide Peter to stay away from Mr. McGregor's line of sight. But Peter takes unnecessary risks and one time his jacket gets stuck in the chicken wire in McGregor's Garden. As a result, Peter has to leave his blue jacket behind and is rescued by McGregor's neighbor Bea.The rabbits are friends with a local woman named Bea (Rose Byrne) who spends her time painting pictures of the rabbits as well as the surrounding nature.Bea takes on a mother-like relationship with the rabbits due to the death of their mother and father (killed by McGregor when Peter's father went into his garden to fetch food for his family). Before McGregor arrived, the countryside was open land and the rabbits were free to roam about as they pleased, but McGregor fenced of all the most fertile bits and locked the rabbits out of all their food sources. The Blue jacket belonged to Peter's father.
One day Peter goes back to retrieve his prized jacket from McGregor's Garden (which he had converted into a scarecrow costume). McGregor spots and catches him, but suddenly dies of a heart attack. Enthralled, Peter invites all of the woodland critters, and then takes over McGregor's old house. This includes Jemima Puddle-Duck (Rose Byrne), Mr Tod (Fayssal Bazzi), Pigling Bland (Ewen Leslie) & Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle (Sia).
Meanwhile in London, McGregor's nephew Thomas (Domhnall Gleeson) works at Harrods department store as a manager where he waits for a promotion. Thomas is a stickler for details and perfection inside the store. He coldly accepts the news about his uncle's death but is infuriated over not getting the promotion (as the promotion went to the nephew of the Managing Director of the company). Thomas is fired when he goes berserk and destroys the store displays.
Thomas receives notice that he has inherited his uncle's property. When he learns that his uncle's house is valuable, he decides to refurbish it so he can sell it and start his own toy store to rival Harrods. Thomas packs his bags and travels to the town of Windermere, where the manor is located. He kicks out Peter and his friends and starts cleaning the manor as per his exacting standards. Bea goes to welcome her new neighbor and gifts him a pair of binoculars. Bea also tells Thomas that the land belonged to the rabbits and asks him not to lock the gates. When Peter and Benjamin sneak back into the garden, Thomas catches the latter and attempts to drown Benjamin in the nearby river. Peter and the triplets rescue him before Thomas can get to the bridge (from where Thomas planned to throw Benjamin into the river), and Thomas accidentally tosses the binoculars that Bea had given him earlier.
Thomas is determined to keep the rabbits out and rides into town to buy a carton of explosives and detonators to protect his manor and garden. Thomas begins to secretly wall up the garden, despite Bea's objections. Thomas is beginning to develop feelings for Bea and doesn't want to antagonize her with his actions against the rabbits, whom he knows that Bea loves very much. Bea teaches Thomas that rabbits are honest and pure and even shows him how rabbits apologize to each other by putting their foreheads against each other.Thomas and Bea fall in love with each other. Peter is jealous when Thomas gets too close to Bea and attacks him. Both Thomas and Peter hide their fight from Bea and pretend to be best friends in front of her.Peter soon angers Bea when he unintentionally ruins her paintings during one excursion, and soon she also turns on Thomas when his violent tendencies begin to show. Bea throws Peter out of her house and Peter decides that Thomas has to go.
Thomas and Peter start a war with each other by setting up traps and other offensive nuisances. Peter and his friends booby-trap Thomas's manor and trapping Thomas in them.Thomas ends up putting up an electric fence around his garden. Peter short circuits the fence and electrifies the manor instead, which delivers multiple electric shocks to Thomas.
This all culminates when Thomas throws dynamite at Peter's burrow and uses more of it to attack Peter in the garden, before telling him that his antics caused him to become aggressive. Bea comes out of her house listening to the noises, but Thomas stops and pretends that nothing is going on.Peter detonates the dynamite to prove to Bea that Thomas was using it on the rabbits, he ends up knocking down the tree on top of the burrow, which crushes Bea's art studio. Thinking that Thomas was responsible for the detonation, Bea breaks up with him, and he goes back to London to work at Harrods again.
Peter feels bad for what he has done, and upon learning that Bea intends to leave the neighborhood, he and Benjamin head to London to find Thomas at Harrods. They make up and rush back to the country where Peter reveals that he had activated the detonator, and he and Thomas apologize to Bea for their fighting. Thomas discovers that he cannot go home because a snobbish couple, whom Thomas had an ugly encounter with prior in the town, had just bought the manor.
Peter and his family use their tricks to drive away an unpleasant wealthy couple who had bought the manor, which allows Thomas to stay. Thomas and Bea resume their relationship, and he allows the wildlife to take food from the garden within reason. Peter and his family restore the burrow, and the yard with Thomas and Bea's help, and Thomas sets up his own toy shop in the village, where Bea showcases her paintings of the rabbits.
