Synopsis

A story of two men's deeply troubled odyssey through isolated rural territory, balancing elements of rivalry, deception and treachery, with those of chance, good fortune and providence. Marshy estuary, barren moorlands, dark woods and windswept sand dunes provide the background setting and for the few people who survive here, it seems, there is little chance of ever escaping.

Peripatetic trader, Vic, spots an incongruously be-suited young man. The younger man, Wes, appears to offer easy pickings for the unscrupulous Vic. But Vic has failed to take into account the innate qualities of the younger man. After abandoning a blinded Wes deep in the woods, Vic makes his way, alone, to a long sought hidden camp.

Wes recovers his sight and, in a series of, what will later turn out to be, fortuitous, chance encounters, finds his own way to the same settlement where Vic has now ingratiated himself. Here, in this ramshackle camp, the two men's presence upsets an already delicate equilibrium.

Greta, potentate, dancer, invalid, maverick, and the settlement's defacto leader, appears to believe Vic's repeated insinuations about Wes. She dispatches Wes on a series of seemingly impossible tasks. Greta's three daughters, Sylvia, Marina and Violet, plus the only other man in the group, Tom, increasingly question these ever-more wayward edicts, but to no avail.

Is Greta really taken in by Vic? Will Wes, against all odds, complete the allotted tasks? How will the growing rivalry between Greta's two younger and unattached daughters, be resolved? And just where will Vic's incessant scheming lead?
