In the 60s, a family from the GDR who came to settle in West Germany before the construction of the Berlin Wall gradually tears apart.

In summer 1968, it has been seven years since the Striesow family fled the GDR to a quiet suburb in West Germany. But Irene, the mother, doesn't support her situation as a homemaker, especially since her husband Dieter is absent more and more. As their three children watch them tear each other apart, they wonder if divorce might actually be a good thing.
