A young woman, forced to live the life of sex worker after the death of her parents, loses her faith in life and human beings in general when her brother dies. Three young persons fall in love with her, a spoilt alcoholic who lives life on the edge and dies as a result of excessive alcoholism, a schoolteacher who involuntarily is made responsible for the death of the lady's school going brother, and the college student whose simplicity and naiveté wins the heart of the sex worker. Patita , loosely translated into English, means Prostitute. The story revolves around the mental trauma and love life of a young woman Rajni (meaning Night), played by Shoma Anand, who has been forced to adopt the life of sex worker after the death of her parents.
Despite her low social status, the lady finds suitors in the form of three young and good looking people. Leading the pack is a rich spoilt brat (Mithun Chakrabarty) with a heart of gold, whose excessive penchant for alcoholism terminates in his premature death. There is a schoolteacher (Vikram), who, in partial recompense for an involuntarily act which lead to the death of Rajnis kid brother, offers his hand to Rajni. But Ranji falls for the innocuous college student (Raj Kiran) whose virtuousness and naiveté wins her heart.
