Synopsis

"Paris Paris" is an Indian Tamil-language comedy-drama film to be released in 2018, directed by Ramesh Aravind and produced by Manu Kumaran. A remake of Vikas Bahl's 2014 Hindi film "Queen", it features Kajal Aggarwal along with Elli Avram, Varun Shashi Rao, Vinaya Prasad and Bhargavi Narayan.

The movie went into production in September 2017 and was simultaneously shot by the same producer in Telugu under the title "That Is Mahalakshmi", in Kannada under the title "Butterfly", and in Malayalam under the title "Zam Zam".

In June 2014, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, the producer of Hindi Queen (2014), made an official announcement that it had sold the remake rights for the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada versions of the film to Thiagarajan, who will make the films through his production studio, Staar Movies. Viacom provided a caveat in the agreement that principal photography of the films must commence by June 8, 2017, otherwise the rights would revert back to Viacom. Soon after the announcement in June 2014, several Indian directors and actresses expressed their desire to make the film, but Thiagarajan stated that nothing was finalized and he was still considering his options. Thiagarajan announced his potential plans to cast Lisa Haydon to reprise her supporting role and for his son Prashanth to act in the film, but he said that he was unsure if Prashanth would agree to play a character with "shades of gray". Samantha held discussions about playing the lead role in July 2014 but turned it down after being unsure of the way the film's original script would be adapted into regional languages in South India. Asin also turned down the offer due to her pending marriage.

After a period of inactivity and further media reports on the casting of the lead, Thiagarajan revealed in February 2016 that he had signed Revathi to direct the Tamil version of the film, while Suhasini would work as the dialogue writer. Soon after, Nayanthara turned down the opportunity to work on the movie citing scheduling issues in early 2016. In mid-2016, Trisha was also approached to play the lead role but conflicting schedules kept her from signing the contract to appear in the film. The media also linked actresses Parvathy Thiruvothu and Nithya Menen with the lead role, but they both also disagreed. During an interaction with the media in November 2016, Thiagarajan revealed that he has finalized Revathi to direct the Tamil and Malayalam versions of the film, while Anish Kuruvilla and Prakash Raj will make the Telugu and Kannada versions. He added that Tamannaah will appear as the lead in the Tamil version, while Amala Paul and Parul Yadav will reprise the role in the Malayalam and Kannada versions. He also stated that Amy Jackson has been contracted to appear in all four versions of the movie in the role originally played by Lisa Haydon. In April 2017, Tamannaah stated that the film was shelved, although Thiagarajan refuted her claims and stated that production would begin in May 2017. He revealed that talks with the actress to play the lead role had fallen through after a dispute over her fee for the lead role.

In June 2017, further confusion regarding the film's remake arose after two production houses separate from Thiagarajan's Staar Movies claimed the rights to the film. As per the contract signed on July 30, 2016, Staar Movies agreed to sign a co-production agreement with Mediente International Films Ltd and Liger Commercial Brokers for the film. However, a mutual cancellation form was subsequently signed by both parties on April 5, 2017 after Mediente allegedly failed to pay the consideration given in the agreement. Then, as per the contract signed on April 21, 2017, Staar Movies agreed to transfer the rights to the four South Indian versions of Queen to Golden Crab Film Production Ltd. To avoid the rights reverting back to Viacom due to three years of inactivity, Staar Movies and Golden Crab quickly started shooting for the film on May 17, 2017 with a set of supporting actors including Nassar playing Vaanil Thedi Nindren. However, on June 3, 2017, Staar Movies re-commissioned and transferred the remake rights of the film to Mediente and Liger, with a Kannada version of the film titled Butterfly (2018) starring Parul Yadav, which began immediately with Ramesh Aravind taking over as director. Staar Movies later made a statement on June 14, 2017 that any agreement with Golden Crab Films was fake. The end credits of the movie indicate that the producer is Manu Kumaran of Mediente, with actress Parul Yadav, Staar Movies, and Liger as co-producers.

Kajal Aggarwal revealed in August 2017, that she has agreed to terms to play the lead role in the Tamil version of the film, which will also be directed by Ramesh Aravind and produced by Mediente, and the shooting of the film will begin in September 2017. In September 2017, it was revealed that Tamannaah will be working on the Telugu version of the film which will be directed by Neelakanta. Amala Paul also opted out of the Malayalam version citing date issues and was replaced by Manjima Mohan. In late September 2017, Mediente announced that the Tamil film will be titled Paris Paris and shooting will begin in October 2017. Writer Tamizhachi Thangapandian was contracted to help adapt the script and chose to shoot the film in Virudhanagar, while music composer Amit Trivedi was contracted to work on the Tamil and Kannada versions. In late October, Jackson left the movie due to scheduling conflicts with the TV series Supergirl.
