Parasite Eve is a story about a biologist (Toshiaki Nagashima) who is doing major research on mitochondria.
One day his beautiful young wife dies after a car accident so he secretly extracts mitochondria from her cells and begins to culture them in a desperate attempt to revive her.
The mithochondria takes on a life of their own and tries to spawn a new species that would eventually try to take over the world.
