A wealthy and snobbish woman's life undergoes changes when her daughter marries a commoner.

Bombay-based Lakshmi is the Chair of the Women's Syndicate as well as an aspiring politician, and lives a wealthy lifestyle along with her husband, Mohanlal; a pampered daughter, Shanti; and unemployed slacker son, Deepak. Mohanlal runs the 'Lakshmi Match Factory' and was born in a middle-classed background. Lakshmi hopes to get Shanti and Deepak married to a Rajkumar and Rajkumari respectively - but her hopes begin to fade when Shanti decides to marry an unemployed painting artist, Shekhar, the son of their factory watchman, Shankarlal.
