Jalaluddin considers this proposal an insult, but since Mehrunissa accepts Alauddin, he also goes along with it.Alauddin's wedding is organized, but on the night of the event, he engages in adultery with another woman and kills Jalaluddin's courtier Shareef Pasha (Daljit Sean Singh) who catches him (Shareef had been sent by Jalaluddin to summon Allauddin to the wedding festivities), leaving his wife-to-be horrified.Alauddin declares that he is entitled to every beautiful thing that the world has to offer.

Meanwhile, Rajput ruler Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) travels to Singhal to acquire rare pearls for his first wife Nagmati (Anupriya Goenka). Nagmati had got the necklace from her home when she married Ratan, but Ratan gave the necklace away as a gift in his largess. This upset Nagmati as the pearls on the necklace are from Singhal Kingdom and are considered extremely rare. Ratan promises to replace the necklace for Nagmati. The Singhal princess Padmavati (Deepika Padukone) unknowingly wounds Ratan Singh while hunting a deer. Ratan Singh displays great courage when he removes the arrow from his body with his bare hands but falls unconscious. Padmavati takes Ratan Singh to nearby caves, where he is treated and his would is cauterized. Later, Padmavati learns that her victim is the ruler, Ratan Singh. The two fall in love and are married. Ratan returns to Mewar with his new Queen Padmavati. They arrive in their capital city of Chittor.

Jalaluddin seizes Delhi's throne (and declares himself as the new Sultan of Delhi) and permits Alauddin to repel a Mongol invasion of Delhi. The Afghan army is only half the size of the Mongol's and Jalaluddin believes that Alauddin will not return alive from this campaign. Alauddin defeats the mighty Mongols, and his stature rises in the Sultanate.Alauddin undertakes an unsanctioned raid on Devagiri and stations himself in the capital city of Kara. Learning of Alauddin's ambition to take over his throne from his wife (Komal Chhabria) and nephew Itaat Khan (Vibhav Roy), Jalaluddin travels to Kara. Alauddin captures Devagiri's princess Chittai (Priyanka Pawar) and makes her part of his harem.

Jalaluddin arrives and gifts the slave Malik Kafur (Jim Sarbh) to Alauddin in exchange for all the riches Alauddin looted from Devagiri. Jalaluddin says that Malik will serve Alauddin till death. Alauddin orders Malik to kill Jalaluddin and his guards, declaring himself Sultan.Alauddin returns to Delhi and Mehrunissa is shocked that he has killed her father to usurp the throne of Delhi.

Padmavati wins hearts in Chittor court with her simplicity, but is lusted for by Singh's royal priest, Raghav Chetan (Aayam Mehta). Padmavati performs Ghoomer in the royal court, which wins Ratan's approval, but the first Queen Nagmati is displeased with Padmavati's status at the court.Chetan is caught watching Ratan and Padmavati when they kiss and is thrown out of the kingdom. Chetan travels to Delhi and impresses Alauddin with his knowledge of the past, the present and the future. Chetan learns of Alauddin's obsession and informs Khilji of Padmavati's beauty. Chetan says that Alauddin will only rule the world when Padmavati is with him.Alauddin, who wants to own every unusual thing in the world, invites the Rajputs to Delhi. Upon learning of their rejection (Ratan says that he will not accept Alauddin as the protector of Mewar under any circumstances), he orders an attack on Chittor.

Ratan Singh sends feelers to all Rajput rulers to unite against Alauddin, but none comes to the aid of Chittor as Alauddin had already warned them not to intervene. Ratan Singh uses his long-range arrows to set fire to Alauddin's camp. During this period Malik Kafur becomes a consort of Alauddin. After many months of unsuccessful attempts in seizing Chittor, Khilji feigns peace (on the occasion of Holi). Ratan puts 2 conditions that his army returns to Delhi and that he comes to the fort alone and unarmed. Upon agreement, Alauddin is allowed to enter Chittor where he meets Ratan. They spend time reviewing the fort, having lunch and playing chess.

Alauddin asks to see Padmavati. The Rajputs, knowing his intentions, threaten him and tell him that he is alive only because he is a guest. He is allowed to see Padmavati momentarily after she insists (Padmavati argues to Ratan that if a war can be averted with Alauddin taking a glimpse of her, then it is a price worth paying). Alauddin returns the invitation to Ratan Singh to come to his tent. Ratan accepts, despite Padmavati's concern that this might be a dishonorable move from Alauddin.

Ratan Singh is taken prisoner by Alauddin, who demands to see Padmavati. Upon being insisted by the chief queen Nagmati, she agrees, and travels to Delhi to meet Khilji. Her conditions are that she will meet Ratan first, there would be no male guardians during their meet and Chetan will be executed for his earlier treachery.

Meanwhile in Delhi, Meanwhile, Alauddin survives an assassination plot by his nephew Itaat Khan, though he is wounded. When Itaat Khan visits him recovering in bed to finish him off, Alauddin awakens and kills him.

While on the Sultanante's frontiers, the Rajputs plan to ambush the Khilji soldiers in the morning which is the time for Namaz. Padmavati frees Ratan with the help of Mehrunissa. The Khilji soldiers who are praying are alerted and attack but are ambushed by the Rajputs disguised as women. Ratan confronts Alauddin, who urges Ratan to take this opportunity to kill him in his weakened state. However, Ratan refuses as this is against the Rajput creed of not attacking the wounded. The Rajput ambush goes ahead as planned, but the Khilji soldiers are alerted to it and repulse the attack, killing the Rajputs who allow the King and Queen to escape. In Chittor, Padmavati is hailed for saving Ratan and compared to a Goddess.

Alauddin imprisons Mehrunissa for helping the Rajputs and marches to Chittor. He and Ratan engage in a single duel; Alauddin is nearly defeated by Ratan who is dishonorably killed by Khilji's forces by being shot with arrows but berates Alauddin for fighting dishonorably before dying. The Khilji army succeeds in defeating the Rajputs and capturing Chittor but is unable to capture the Rajput women who commit Jauhar with Padmavati, rendering Alauddin's quest a failure and leaving him furious.
