Margie Foster. a hard-working girl down on her luck, falls in with a brassy shoplifter named Pearl in San Francisco. After pulling her second act of shoplifting, Marge gets panicky and takes a bus to Los Angeles with an expensive stolen watch in her pocket. She gets a waitress job in a small restaurant and is able to maintain a small apartment and save a few dollars. Eddie, the proprietor, is kind to her and when she befriends another unfortunate, Flo, he gives Eddie gives her a job and Margie lets her share the apartment. Romance enters Margie's life in Mitch Moore, a con-man who owns a dry-cleaning shop, managed by Gus, which is just a cover for a bookie operation. Mitch, a first-class, all-around heel, augments his income by fleecing women who fall in love with him. Once he has their money, he discards them. Marge gives him her $800 savings and then, when Pearl bumps into her at the restaurant, Marge decides to pull one more job with Pearl. to get the extra money Mitch is badgering her for in order to come through with his promise to marry her.
