Synopsis

'Offstage' is a reality television mini-series about the lives of musical theatre artists as they prepare for their final grand show. It explores the creative process that goes into producing a piece of theatre from developing an idea to the onstage performance. The main focus is a group of aspiring artists and we get to follow their journey as their dreams come true. The mini-series is an intimate, in-depth look at the musical piece of theatre, revealing the emotional road from the creative concept to the onstage show.

In all its authenticity, we observe the highs and the lows, moments of euphoria as well as the struggle of putting the performance together while being pressured by time and resource limitations, and miscommunication within the group. Videotapes of an offstage preparation for the show twine with pre-recorded live performance segments. We follow the group being formed, the concept being developed, rehearsals, and the final show.

A cast of students is tasked with forming their own theatre company. They need to collaborate with their colleagues not only by taking responsibility for roles such as a director, a designer, and movement and musical directors, but also by taking full control over finance, budgets, and marketing to produce a business plan. The company is called InMotion, E-motion in Motion. A 20-minute movement-based piece of theatre is to be produced for which they make their own music. Their company is particularly interested in communicating through movement therefore it has been decided by the cast that they will follow the experimental physical theatre practices in order to deliver the performance and convey their artistic message.
