The joviality of the newly arrived and trained priest Amaro draws attention and some question his ability to perform his duties, while he meets Amélia, the most beautiful young woman in Leiria, and the vow of celibacy is questioned.
Based on Eça de Queirós' novel of the same name (published in 1875, amidst great controversy and protests from the Catholic Church), "The Crime of Father Amaro" is a series of six 45-minute episodes. The plot is set in Leiria in the late 1860s and follows the story of the forbidden passion between Amaro, a young priest, and Amélia "the most beautiful girl in Leiria". Tense, emotional and anchored in personality conflicts, the series "O Crime do Padre Amaro" takes a critical look at society and the church in Portugal, in 19th century Leiria.
