Two kids take a book from a trash can. They begin to read the story of a poor neighborhood in Mexico City. Carpenter Pepe "El Toro" (Infante) lives with his daughter Chachita (Munoz) and woos pretty "Chorreada" (Pavon). Around them, a group of fellows live their lives in many ways: a pair of always-drunk women known as "La Tostada" (The Toast) and "La Guayaba" (The Guava); a beautiful woman (Jurado) who always oversleeps; a hooker with pneumonia (La Tisica) with a dark past. Third world hero, 'Pepe el Toro' ('Pepe the Bull') is an honest man trying to get by every day working in his little carpentry shop. Taking care of her paralytic mother and her teen daughter, whom he keeps from knowing the truth about her missing mother, he struggles in a ultra-poor neighborhood where he can't keep up with miseries and personal losses. He ends up, unjustly, in jail from which he escapes to go to see his dying mother. He is recaptured and brought back into the penitentiary where he finds and manages to get a dramatic confession from the perpetrator of the murder he was accused with. Once free he goes back to his daughter and to his faithful girlfriend, whom he marries and has a baby with and retakes on his noble occupation and his poor but happy life.
