A man, who has been married for 27 years, falls in love with his 18-year-old daughter's friend.
Vijay lives a wealthy lifestyle in India along with his wife, Amrita, to who he has been married to for 27 years, and a daughter, Ritu, who is now 18 years of age. The family has a vast estate, where Vijay likes to trek around indulging in his sole passion - photography. Amrita, who was an accomplished Kuchipudi dancer, she even won two gold medals, gave up her passion to look after the family. This holiday, Ritu brought along a friend, Jia, to this household. Jia, quite childish, now lives with her divorcée mom in Brisbane, Australia, resents her lifestyle, especially after her mom started living with another man. When Rita sprains her ankle, both Vijay and Jia are thrown into each other's company. Amrita notices that Vijay suddenly starts singing to himself, then bursting into uncontrollable fits of laughter. Then all of a sudden, Ritu asks Jia to leave the household, but is prevented by Vijay. Things spiral out of control when Amrita's brother, Shridhar, arrives for a short visit, and finds out that Vijay and Jia have pledged their love for each other. Young Ritu (Shradha Arya) brings her friend Jia (Jiah Khan) to spend the holidays with her at her home in Kerala. Ritu's parents Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan) and Amrita (Revathi) have a beautiful home surrounded by picture-perfect surroundings. Vijay is an artistic photographer (whose work in published in international journals) and Amrita is a homemaker.Vijay sees Jia as a childish rebel from the very start. Mandal is the house servant and is deaf.
Jia's mother lives alone in Australia (Jia's parents are divorced), and she studies in India. She is a free-spirited teenager with no attachments and no worries. She professes some affinity to Vijay, but it doesn't go much further than that.Jia is also looking for excitement in life. She roams around the house in flimsy clothes and shorts, which irritates Amrita. Amrita is polite to Jia as she is Ritu's friend, and she does not want to be rude.
Jia gets interested in Vijay's work and gets him talking by being provocative and challenging that she does not like his work. Jia finds Vijay fascinating as he has a very unique point of view, and he tries to express that through his photographs.Jia has the habit of saying something and then retracting it after creating a needless controversy. Then she would pretend that she was only joking and tells people to "take light".Jia says that she likes Vijay's work and wants to understand it. Vijay takes time to explain his photographs to her. Jia tells Ritu that she loves Vijay, but Ritu does not take her seriously.
But Vijay's world is turned upside down when he takes pictures of Jia watering herself down with the garden hose, while wearing sheer white clothes. Jia sees Vijay taking pictures of her and does not mind. Amrita already can sense that there is something wrong about Jia.Something innocent grows into something bigger, and something bigger grows into something beyond control.
Vijay takes her on a tour of his estate. Ritu could not come as she twisted her ankle while playing badminton with Jia. Ritu had seen the estate many times before and begs Vijay to take Jia.Jia is emotionally volatile and would be distraught one minute and would be laughing the next. All this attracts Vijay to Jia as all these feelings are very new to him. Vijay and Jia spend hours roaming the hills and the wonderful scenery.
Vijay and Jia end up spending time alone in a cabin which Vijay uses to sleep overnight when he has to take early morning shots. Vijay says that he loves Jia's spirit and Jia reciprocates.
Vijay has been married to Amrita for 27 years but hesitates when asked if he still loves his wife. Vijay is offended when Jia asks if he has had an affair during his marriage.
Jia is playful with Vijay (she kisses Vijay on the cheeks on their way back when he gets angry), which stirs feelings in him towards Jia. Vijay starts to feel young and wanted again. Vijay says that every person gets afraid of death in their advanced years and a touch of youth makes them forget all the gloominess of their impending demise and enjoy life again.The spark returns in his life. It is not just the physical attraction, but the fact that being close to Jia makes him forget his age and reminds him that life can be fun and worth living.
Vijay develops Jia's pictures and says to Jia that he finds them sexy. When pulled into an argument between Jia and Ritu, Vijay agrees with Jia that she is beautiful. Jia shares her poetry with Vijay.
Jia tells Vijay that Rishi (Aftab Shivdasani) is her childhood friend and loves her, but she is not in love with him. Jia starts to play a dangerous game by making her feelings about Vijay known subtly to Amrita and seriously to Vijay. Jia tells Vijay that he is her type and wants to steal him.While Amrita treats her like a kid, Vijay starts to take Jia very seriously.Jia tells Vijay that she loves him. She confesses that she hates Australia, and she hates going back there, specifically back to her father. All of this gives Vijay the impression that Jia is serious about him.
Jia's world collides with Vijay's causing three casualties. Ritu witnesses Vijay and Jia kissing and tries to get Jia out of the house without revealing the truth to her mother but fails. Ritu cannot stand to be in the same room as Jia.Around this time, Amrita's brother Shridhar (Nassar) visits them. Through a sequence of events, he uncovers the disturbing truth about Jia and Vijay. Ritu basically breaks down and confesses the truth to Shridhar.Shridhar questions Vijay and realizes that things are serious between Jia and him. When Ritu confronts Jia, Vijay stops her and tells Ritu to leave.Vijay confesses his love for Jia to Amrita, leaving her shattered.
As if things were not awkward enough, Rishi arrives at Vijay's house, proclaiming his love for Jia. Vijay finally realizes that he is not right for Jia and that she belongs to someone young like Rishi. Shridhar tries to explain to Vijay that an 18-year-old Jia cannot understand the meaning of love. This is perhaps just an infatuation for her. Vijay is incredibly upset and admits to Shridhar that he is not right for Jia.
Meanwhile Jia asks Rishi to go away and when Rishi declares his love for her, she says she loves Vijay, which Rishi is unable to believe.Finally, Vijay stands up for himself and asks Jia to leave his house. Jia leaves, but the damage to Vijay's life is done. Ritu and Amrita lose all respect for him. Ritu decides to leave for America for higher studies.
Vijay contemplates suicide, but is unable to go through that as well, as he wants to re-live his few precious moments with Jia a little longer and feel alive once again.
