Summaries

Bawo, Lulo and Sibel are the main characters in the documentary film 'Newo Ziro'; portraying three generations of German Gypsies. Joining them is Sasha Reinhardt, the manager of 'Django's Heirs' music festival. The film provides deep insights into a culture which is among those most discriminated against in Europe. Bawo, Lulo and Sibel live actively in Germany's majority society without denying their roots. Sasha does not believe in 'new times'. He would rather have everything remain as it is. The old certainties are losing their reliability. Language and culture are fading. Peddling goods, collecting junk and selling furniture, the traditional occupations of the Sinti, now have little to offer; only the unique music, which gained international fame through Django Reinhardt, remains the exception.—Anonymous
