A small-time gambler on the run from the law hides in his ex-wife's house, accidentally kills a drunken detective during a fight, and takes his ex-wife hostage during a shootout with the LAPD.

Small-time gambler flees town and hooks up with his ex-wife (Virginia) to avoid arrest for murder. Protecting Virginia from a masher, he accidentally kills the man, then tries to make it look like an accident. Steve Garry (Dane Clark), a fugitive from the police who are seeking him as a material witness in a murder case, refuses to give himself up claiming that if he did so, he would be convicting an innocent man. Virginia Merrill (Cathy O'Donnell), his ex-wife allows him to hide out in her apartment. But when a drunken detective makes advances on her, he comes out of hiding, there is a fight and the detective is killed.
