A wealthy widower swaps identity with his servant to find himself a suitable bride.

Widower Amar is well-off financially, and lives in a house with his daughter, and servant Dayal. His sister and brother-in-law want him to marry again, so that his daughter can have the love and care of a woman. Amar reluctantly agrees. Together they set out to check out two sisters, Shobha, and Sheela. Amar goes as Dayal, and Dayal goes as Amar, as Amar is not sure if a step-mother will be able to bestow care and love as a real mother. They arrive at the household of Durga, Shanti Swarup, Renu, Sheela, and their servant Geeta. They begin to settle down, Dayal in a spacious room, and Amar in the servant's quarters, which consists of an untidy room with no electricity. It is not long before Amar finds out that he is attracted to Geeta, and not to the two sisters, but in his present state, he cannot reveal himself, and openly propose marriage. In the meantime, Durga starts getting suspicious about Amar, and starts wondering if Amar is actually a servant or a crook.—rAjOo ([email protected])

Synopsis

Amar (Sanjeev Kumar), is a wealthy widower (he runs a successful toy store in the city) (he is empathetic and considerate to other feelings, especially to the treatment meted out to step children by mothers in 2nd marriages) who shares his house with his daughter Aarti and a servant Dayal (Mehmood) in the city of Bhopal. He is constantly bothered by his sister and brother-in-law (Anwar Hussain) (who was himself brought up by a stepmother), who want him to remarry - if not for his sake, then for the sake of his young daughter who needs the love of a mother.

Amar having had enough reluctantly agrees to marry. They scout for potential wives, and decide to choose between two sisters-Shobha (Madhu Malini), and Sheela (Meena T.) who reside in Bombay. Since Amar has never met either of them, he is not sure if they will be the appropriate choice. In order to test them, when he visits them in Bombay - he decides to swap places with his servant Dayal.

The party (Amar, Aarti and Dayal) arrive at the prospective-in-laws house, which features Durga (Lalita Pawar), as the arrogant and abusive prospective mother-in-law and her weak and helpless husband Shanti Swarup (Manmohan Krishna) and father of the two daughters.Shobha is dumb, while Sheela is a dancer, but doesn't like a groom who has a kid from the first marriage.

Dayal (as Amar) is given a spacious room, and Amar (as Dayal) is settled into the servant's quarters, which consists of an untidy room with no electricity. Soon, Amar (the real one) realizes that he is in fact attracted to Geeta, played by Jaya Bhaduri, (the household servant). Geeta is an orphan who works in the house, and is mistreated by everyone except Shanti Swarup.Geeta sees that Aarti is very attached to Amar (as Dayal).. Amar (as Dayal) tells her that he considers Aarti as his own daughter and seeks a wife who will also treat her like a mother.The cooks (Shibban and Bansi) of the house befriend Amar (As Dayal). Durga had told the cooks to serve food cooked in oil, but the cooks ignore her and cook it in ghee. They inform Amar (As Dayal) that the whole house is full of deceptions. Shanti Swarup has no say and Durga runs the show.

Shibban befriends Dayal (As Amar), who tells Shibban to go on strike to demand a pay rise from Durga, who has always refused it in the past and only pays them rs 50. But Durga is adamant and decides to fire them instead. She asks Dayal (As Amar) to deploy Amar (as Dayal) as the cook for the house. soon, Geeta realizes that Amar (as Dayal) cant cook and bails him out by helping to cook.When Dayal (As Amar) finds out, he goes rushing to the kitchen to help Amar (as Dayal) in the cooking. But then Durga arrives and starts helping out. Eventually Durga, Shobha and Sheela start working in the kitchen. Amar (as Dayal) has a sick stomach and is ordered out and Geeta helps Dayal (as Amar) to set up his bath.

Amar cannot reveal himself and openly propose marriage to her, since he is posing as a servant. Amar (as Dayal) finally conjures up courage to face Geeta and admits his feelings for her and says he wants to marry her. Geeta is overjoyed and wants to meet Amar (as Dayal) but is afraid that Durga will never agree to the match.Jaggu (Jalal Agha) is a local grocer who supplies the Durga kitchen and is close to her. Jaggu always flirts with Geeta, which she does not like, but this time Amar (as Dayal) stands up for her and tells Jaggu to keep within his limits.Amar (As Dayal) figures out that while Shobha likes Dayal (as Amar), but Sheela doesn't. Durga suspects something is wrong & tries to get Aarti to tell the truth, but when Amar (as Dayal) tries to intervene, Durga is offended and slaps him hard.Meanwhile Amar (as Dayal) sees how Aarti is getting closer and closer to Geeta and now feels comfortable even sleeping with her. But Durga breaks all the toys that Geeta had made to entertain Aarti. Geeta is devastated.

A side story features Dayal's younger brother Vijay, who is studying in Bombay and is supported by Dayal. It turns out in a fateful co-incidence, unbeknownst to her parents and to Dayal, that Vijay (Shailendra Singh) is Sheela's secret college boyfriend.Dayal (as Amar) discovers this by accident when on a date with Shobha; the two couples accidentally bump into each other in a club. Sheela introduces Dayal to Vijay as Amar. Vijay is intrigued. Dayal visits Vijay at his hostel and tells him the truth. Dayal tells Vijay that Amar might select Sheela as Aarti's mother and hence begs him to forget Sheela.

Durga takes everyone out for sightseeing, but Geeta is at home. Jaggu arrives and tries to flirt. Geeta slaps Jaggu and then he tries to force himself upon her. Amar (As Dayal) intervenes and beats up Jaggu badly. eventually Geeta learns from Aarti that Amar (As Dayal) is her real dad and Dayal (as Amar) is a servant.When Aarti speaks to Amar, he says he likes Geeta, but says she is a maid and hence perhaps cant be her mother.Jaggu meanwhile speaks to Durga and asks for Geeta's hand in marriage. Durga accepts when she learns that Geeta loves Amar (as Dayal). Geeta decides to leave the house, but Durga is adamant that Geeta's mother left her in her care and as such it is Durga's right to marry her away to whomever she sees fit.Shanti SWarup asks Amar (as Dayal) to get Geeta back. He tells Amar (as Dayal) that Geeta is not a servant, but the daughter of Durga's friend. Geeta lost both her parents as a kid and Durga promised to bring her up as her own child. But over years, Durga treated Geeta only like a servant.

Amar (as Dayal) catches up to Geeta and requests her to stop for Aarti's sake. Geeta addresses Amar as Amar and accepts his proposal. Thats when Jaggu shows up with goons. Amar beats them up, which is when police arrives as Durga had complained that Geeta had run away with house servant DayalMeanwhile Amar's sister arrives at Durga's and recognizes Dayal as Dayal. Now Police arrives with Jaggu, Amar and Geeta. Shanti Swarup tells police to arrest Jaggu for harassing Geeta and recognizes Amar as Amar.Amar reveals that Sheela loves Vijay and Shobha loves Dayal. Durga is livid that both her daughters are wedding servants. Amar then accepts Geeta as his wife. Amar transfers his toy factory to Dayal and Vijay to make them his equals. Amar says that Dayal's dad died when he was young. Dayal sacrificed his life to educate Vijay and in the process brought up Amar as well. Dayal is a God to him.

even then Durga refuses to marry her daughters to Dayal and Vijay. Now Shanti Swarup gets up and starts beating Durga to put her in her place. Geeta stops him. Durga apologizes for her behavior and agrees to the weddings.
