An impoverished young man goes to work for a lawyer. He falls for a girl he meets in the lawyer's office. Later, he is devastated to learn that the girl's father has arranged for her to marry the lawyer whom he considers far more eligible than the young man. However, before the marriage can take place, a series of dramatic events and disclosures occur which change the lives of all the participants and which bring about a surprising conclusion.—van Goethem
