This Spin-off from Baby (2015) provides the back-story of intelligence agent Shabana, and chronicles how she becomes a spy.
Shabana a college student who is also Kudo fighter lives with her mother in Mumbai at a young age she had killed her father trying to save her mother from his daily abuse and was sent to children remand home. Shabana is in love with Jai who gets killed by some spoiled brats when he tries to save Shabana from their abuse. Three months after the death of Jai the police haven't made any arrest as they were trying to save the culprits. Shabana then gets a anonymous call from Ranvir Singh telling that he will provide her details of Jai's killers in return she has to work for their secret National Defense Force.—[email protected]
Two Indian agents working under Ranvir Singh (Manoj Bajpai) are chasing an international arms dealer Mikhail (Rajesh Bhati), but instead he kills them both and escapes. Mikhail sends a text to Ranvir saying that killing him is not the simple and that Ranvir should send him their best agent.
A year later Shabana Khan (Taapsee Pannu) a college student in Mumbai, who is also Judo fighter is being followed by Indian agency as a potential recruit. Shabana demonstrates that when deliberately provoked, she will not take it lying down and will retaliate appropriately. The agency sends men to hit Shabana inappropriately while she is walking in a crowded market, and she responds in kind.
Shabana had a past of being kept in juvenile home for 2 years for killing her abusive father who used to physically assault her mother Farida Begum Khan (Natasha Rastogi). Shabana used to think of the abuse as normal, but as she grew up, she saw that her friends had normal families and this abuse from her father was wrong and illegal. One night, her mother was being strangled by her father, and Farida was yelling Shabana's name. Shabana hit her father on the back of his head with a brass flower vase, thereby causing his death.Although Shabana acted in self-defense, it still amounted to involuntary manslaughter. This event, which took place 5 years ago, is what brought her to the agency's attention.
Shabana is shown to be very focused on her studies and her sports and is not interested or distracted by boys. Jai (Taher Shabbir) is Shabana's friend who has been dropping her to and from college for a year now. Jai musters the courage to ask Shabana out on a date and she agrees.At a Judo tournament, Shabana displays amazing tactical awareness by winning a bout against a much better opponent by tiring her out, and then winning the fight in the last round.
One fateful night, Shabana goes out on a dinner date with her friend Jai on his birthday. During their bike ride home, Shabana faces eve teasing from a group of four drunk men in a jeep. Later it turns into a physical altercation resulting in Jai getting killed by one of the men named Karan (Bhuvan Arora) and men running away.
Shabana is distraught as Jai is cremated. The police take no action for 3 months saying that Shabana did not note down the license plate number of the jeep, and her description of the killers is very vague. The main assailant escapes justice after being identified as the son of an influential man.
Soon after, Shabana receives a call from an unknown number asking if she wants to avenge her lover's death. Shabana says that she wants justice for Jai by killing the murderers herself. She says that it cannot be police incompetence that the killers have not be traced for 3 months. The caller says that the murder spot is covered by 4 shops and 6 buildings whose CCTVs recorded everything. The caller took 1 hour to track the killers down.
The unknown caller agrees to help her persecute the killers in exchange for Shabana joining a secret agency and conducting missions for them. The caller says that the agency works outside the law to uphold the values of natural justice and to protect the country from its enemies. Shabana wants to know if the agency could have stopped Jai's killing, but the caller responds that Shabana was not one of them at that point in time. He says that in her case, all they could do was to send the police and ambulance to the location before she called anyone.
Shabana agrees to the proposal and is given a test to stop an assassin from killing an informer in a crowded market. Shabana executes the plan perfectly by following instructions. She says that she was never afraid as she knew that the agency looks after its own.Shabana accordingly receives information on the killer's whereabouts and training to help her in killing them.Shabana then reaches Goa to the same hotel were the main culprit Karan who killed Jai was staying.
Keeping watch at a club, she is protected by another agent, whom Ranvir tells her is their best. When she asks why they are helping her, Ranvir tells her she is indispensable to them, and since this is important to her, they will help her as best they can. She decides to kill only the main assailant, leaving the others to live in fear for their lives. After she kills the guy in his hotel room, Ajay Singh (Akshay Kumar), who protected her at the club, helps her escape.The unknown caller is revealed to be Ranvir Singh.
Following this Shabana is recruited into the secret agency on a trial basis, wherein she is to receive extensive training in physical fitness and fighting techniques, instructed by an agent Cableman (Virendra Saxena) who typically poses as a cable-man. Ranvir says that the only agenda of the agency is national security at all costs. He says that the agency tracks 15,000 potential candidates every year and only 4 are chosen every year.
The story then focuses on a global arms dealer and supplier called Mikhail (Prithviraj Sukumaran), who has been on the radar of several intelligence agencies and has been evading them for 10 years now. Mikhail was tracked down 2 agents 18 months ago, whom he killed and since than Mikhail was not seen and is completely off the grid.Three Indian Agents then tracks down Tony considered as Mikhail's right hand, in Malaysia. During interrogation Tony tips them a German Doctor's name who has surgically changed Mikhail's face.
By the time agency contacts the Doctor to get Mikhail's new look, Tony kills all three agents and escapes, revealing that he himself is Mikhail.Shabana is teamed up with Ajay to track Mikhail. Ajay tracks Sona (Eli Avaram), who knows the location of Mikhail's right hand person Mallik. Ajay gets Shabana to interrogate Sona for Mallik's location.
Ranvir Singh gets the tip from Ajay (who interrogates Mallik) that Mikhail is planning another plastic surgery to change his face again. This time Shabana is sent to kill Mikhail, with the help of Ajay Singh and Om Prakash Shukla (Anupam Kher).
Shabana enters the hospital disguised as a patient. After getting rid of Mikhail's private security, Shabana is about to kill Mikhail in OT. To her surprise Mikhail is very much awake as he had refused to take anesthesia during operation.After quite a tussle, Mikhail almost strangles Shabana. But finally, Shabana manages to kill Mikhail and escapes from the police, once again with the help of Ajay.
