The "true story" of John Smith and his disappearing wives, and how the perseverance of his second wife Fran's daughter and sister finally brought the story together and broke at least part of the case.

After Fran Smith disappears one day in mysterious circumstances, Fran's sister Sherrie and daughter Deanna endlessly search for her with enduring hope. The most likely suspect in Fran's disappearance is her husband John, but without a body, neither Deanna nor Sherrie can prove that a murder has even been committed. With Sherrie's support, Deanna embarks on an 11-year search to trace John's past, and she eventually uncovers a 25-year-old missing-person case involving John's first wife, who also disappeared under suspicious circumstances.
