Synopsis

Gurukul is a university run by the stubborn Narayan Shankar (Amitabh Bachchan). Narayan wants the best out of his students so places an emphasis on honor, tradition and discipline. Narayan has utmost belief in his principles and says that his students have achieved great heights in their respective careers by staying true to the principles they acquired at Gurukul. Narayan wants his students to be completely committed to Gurukul and leave the outside world behind the moment they step inside the school. He has run the university for 25 years and forbids any kind of romance - anybody he catches falling in love will be expelled. Once expelled by Gurukul, a student cannot find admission anywhere in the country, such is the reputation of Gurukul and Narayan.

The focus is on three boys: Sameer (Jugal Hansraj), Vicky (Uday Chopra) and Karan (Jimmy Shergill) who are students of Gurukul and are in love with three different women. The 3 boys are roommates at Gurukul.Sameer is in love with his childhood friend Sanjana (Kim Sharma), but they got separated as they grew up. Sameer saw her last 6 years ago but knows that she has recently moved in the same town as him. Sameer runs into Sanjana at a local shop.

Vicky falls for a girl from the university next door named Ishika (Shamita Shetty). Ishika is a brat, and her father is a rich industrialist. Miss Monica (Helen) is the headmistress of the girl's school.

Karan becomes smitten by a girl he sees at the train station named Kiran (Preeti Jhangiani). Kiran is a widow and lives with her father-in-law Major General Khanna (Amrish Puri) and sister-in-law Nandini (Shefali Shah). Khan Baba (Ram Mohan) is a worker at the railway station who tells Karan about Kiran's story. Kiran waits daily at the train station waiting for her husband to return.

However, the three boys realize that there is no point in attempting to get their love interests due to the fear of expulsion from Gurukul. Karan reveals that Narayan had expelled a brilliant student many years ago for falling in love. The student's career got derailed and nobody knows where he ended up. The girl was Narayan's only daughter, and she committed suicide.

Raj Aryan (Shahrukh Khan) joins Gurukul as a music teacher. Narayan was not keen to hire Raj, as Gurukul has never had an English teacher, but Raj promises to leave if he cannot get enough students interested in his music class. On his first day, Raj plays a tune on his violin as students are leaving class and gets them interested in music. By end of day, he has a class full of students. Narayan offers Raj a contract but warns him that he does not like change.

Raj is a strong believer of love - when he learns the three boys are in love, he encourages them to follow their hearts. He also slowly starts introducing changes to Gurukul much to the disgust of Narayan. Raj gets permission from Narayan so Sameer can do a part time job in the city after school. Raj argues that Sameer's father has passed away and the school should help him to earn money to pay his fees.

The boys soon end up disappointed when trying to get their love interests. Sameer learns Sanjana has a boyfriend Deepak Singhania (Raman Lamba). Sanjana lives with her father Tom Paul (Saurabh Shukla).

Vicky only makes Ishika dislike him when trying to woo her. Ishika is always with her 2 friends Aanchal (Meghna Patel) and Malini (Sindhu Tolani).Karan learns that Kiran was married to a pilot who is assumed dead. Kiran works at a children's hospital to do something meaningful with her life.

Raj tells the boys not to be disappointed. He gets Sameer a part time job at a cafe in the marketplace outside Gurukul to be closer with Sanjana, who lives there. The cafe is owned by Kake (Anupam Kher) who is himself in love with Preeto (Archana Puran Singh).he allows Vicky to attend dance sessions with Ishika at the all-girls college; and he gives private piano lessons to Karan to impress Kiran and her family.

Raj believes they are lucky because Raj's love Megha (Aishwarya Rai) is dead. He says he continues to love her in the same way and believes the boys should also do the same. Raj often imagines that Megha is by his side.

Soon, Raj throws a party in Gurukul and invites the girls' school from next door - part of his plan to spread love throughout Gurukul. Narayan Shankar is furious and decides to sack Raj immediately. Raj reveals that he is Raj Aryan Malhotra. Raj was a student at Gurukul years ago and was expelled because he loved Megha, who was Narayan's only daughter. When Raj was expelled, Megha committed suicide.

Raj believed that this incident would make Narayan change for the better; it only made him more stubborn. Raj promises that, before he leaves Gurukul, he will fill it with so much love that even Narayan himself will not be able to remove it. A battle now begins between love (Raj) and fear (Narayan). Narayan decides that he will keep Raj at Gurukul as a challenge.

Sameer, Vicky, and Karan soon win over the girls they love - Raj is winning the battle for the moment. Narayan does not give up so easily; when he sees the rules of Gurukul are being broken, he tightens them. The three boys continue to break the rules, which encourages the other students to do the same. Narayan decides to expel the three.

Raj tries to reason with Narayan - he tells him that what the three boys did was caused by him so they should not be expelled for it. Raj also says that he feels Narayan lost the battle, because his daughter left him and now Raj (who considered Narayan an elder) is leaving him.

Raj's words make Narayan realize his mistake. He publicly apologizes to the students and steps down as the principal, allowing Raj to take over. Raj turns Gurukul into a love-filled university. In the end Raj, Narayan and an image of Megha walk happily towards the gates of Gurukul.
