In an Austrian alpine village, a 9-year-old boy withdraws into speechless isolation upon the death of his grandmother. An elderly vagabond is the only person to break through to the boy. The boy steals religious items from a church, but the old vagabond is wrongly suspected of the theft. After a snowy pursuit by villagers, a church official takes the boy away to the priesthood.—anonymous
