Miguel de la Madrid suffered the tragedy of his father's murder during his early childhood. He would grow up in an urban, middle-class setting as an excellent student. He was the first of any Mexican president to enroll in a graduate studies program in the United States. He grew to admire liberal thought of the nineteenth century.
