"Mere Brother Ki Dulhan" is a quirky romantic comedy set in the world of the upper middle class in Northern India. Kush Agnihotri (Imran Khan) is looking for the ideal Indian bride for his brother Luv Agnihotri (Ali Zafar) who stays in London. In his quest, Kush goes through an array of wacky encounters with several families until he finally finds that perfect girl in Dimple Dixit (Katrina Kaif), the craziest / wackiest girl he has ever known. Both the families meet. Formalities completed. Preparations proceed in full swing. And just then, our hero Kush falls in love with Dimple, his brother's dulhan. London-based Luv Agnihotri decides to end his bachelorhood and asks his Bollywood film-maker brother, Kush, to find a bride for him - much to the displeasure of his Dehradun-based father. Kush accordingly meets and interviews a variety of women, and finally selects Delhi-based Dimple Dixit, a woman he had known before, to be the perfect match. Dimple and Luv meet on-line, are attracted to each other, and the former travels to India where the two families get the couple formally engaged. It is then Dimple decides that she prefers Kush. Watch as things spiral out of control when she insists that Kush must elope with her.
Luv (Ali Zafar) has a bad break-up with his girlfriend Piyali in London. Piyali complains that Luv is a slob, while Luv feels the Piyali takes everything too seriously. Piyali says that she even learned how to cook Indian food for Luv, but he retorts that Piyali has changed into a British cow, always nagging and complaining. Luv breaks up with Piyali saying that with her he would have to take a Disprin every day, just to survive.
Luv insists his younger brother Kush (Imran Khan) to find him a bride. Kush is an assistant film director and photographer in Mumbai. Kush reaches home in Dehradun to meet his army veteran father, Col. (Retd.) Swarnik Agnihotri, and homemaker mother, Kanak (Suparna Marwah). Kush's father believes that the current generation to completely confused and has no clue what it wants from life.
Kush travels all over India to find a bride, who is suitable for his brother. However, he and his friends Shobit (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) and Rohit (Tariq Vasudeva) are initially unsuccessful. The girls they meet have some issue or the other, a patriarchal family, unrealistic ambitions to be a Bollywood star, too much attachment to housework, interested in Luv's pound salary converted into Indian rupees and so on.
His friends come up with an idea to advertise this in a newspaper. However, this attracts all the wrong kind of people as they are only interested in Luv's money and see him as a chance to get to London.A certain Dilip Dixit responds to the advertisement, claiming that he is looking for a suitable groom for his daughter. Dilip is in the foreign services and posted in Delhi.Dilip was himself posted in London for 18 years and his daughter was born and brought up there. This is why he reached out for Luv, as he thought they would be mutually compatible.
Then enters Dimple (Katrina Kaif), an outgoing & loud youngster whom Kush had met 5 years back on a trip.Kush meets Dimple again when her dad invites Kush for a meeting. Kush had met Dimple when he was back in college. He was on a trip with friends to Agra, where Dimple had organized an impromptu concert & attracted huge crowds & was subsequently arrested by police. Dimple had spent all her youth in London & had just come back to India a year back. Kush is impressed with the way Dimple handles herself & battles the gender stereotypes which typecast her as a person who sleeps around. Dimple feels suffocated with the narrow mindedness of Indian males.
In present day Dimple tells Kush that she has lived her life, she is 27 years old & wants to settle down with a good boy. She owes that much to her parents. Dimple says that she always had fun in life, but never crossed a line. Obnoxious and loud, Dimple is everything that Kush is not, but he asks her to consider the alliance.Kush decides Dimple is the perfect bride, and after meeting each other over Skype, Dimple and Luv agree to the marriage.
For the wedding preparations Dimple's dad invites Kush's entire family to a farmhouse in Delhi. Dimple & Kush spend a lot of time together on account of preparations & the associated running around Delhi. Dimple and Kush are sent to select a wedding card that Dimple likes. Kush has to drive a scooter for the first time as a car will not fit into the narrow lanes of Old Delhi markets. Dimple makes it difficult for Kush to continually moving around in the back seat, leading Kush to lose the balance of the scooter and crashing it into the back of an auto-rickshaw.
Dimple is depressed on losing her carefree life & Kush offers to help her live the last 48 free hours of her life the way she wants. Dimple & Kush get even closer & get to know each other better. Once Luv arrives in India for the wedding, Kush is forced to step back & allow Luv to spend time with Dimple.
During the wedding preparations however, Kush and Dimple realize they have fallen in love with each other. Dimple & Luv get engaged to each other. At the engagement Kush's friends also realize that he has feelings for Dimple.
They come up with hilarious, crazy plans to get married, but fail in every attempt. Dimple wants to run away & elope, but Kush refuses. Dimple drugs Kush & wheels him away. Kush awakes in the middle of Rajasthan. Kush decides that they have to go back for the sake of their families.
Upon return they are told that the wedding has been canceled co Dimple's simpleton brother Ajay (Arfeen Khan) wanted the wedding to happen from Agra, where Taj Mahal could be seen. The entire wedding party shifts to Agra.On one drunken night Luv reveals that Piyali still has feelings for him & sends him messages daily.
Dimple then calls Luv's ex-girlfriend, Piyali (Tara D'Souza) and makes her believe that Luv is still in love with her. Luv then realizes that he does truly love Piyali and the two elope. When Dimple's father Dilip Dixit (Kanwaljit Singh) and Kush's father Colonel (Parikshat Sahni) find this out, they figure that the only way to protect their respect and pride is to agree Kush and Dimple to get married.However, Kush and Dimple lay out a condition. If Luv and Piyali can be accepted into the house, Kush will marry Dimple. The condition is accepted.
