Sho, a teenager living alone in Tokyo, is visited by his father who brings the ashes of his recently murdered aunt, Matsuko. His father asks Sho to clean her apartment, which is filled with years of collected junk. As Sho goes through her belongings and talks to neighbors, he uncovers the tragic and heartbreaking life of Matsuko, a woman he never knew.
