Mariquilla is an Andalusian girl living with her uncle in a small village near Seville. Her cheerful condition and singing abilities brighten people's lives, but she is too shameful when it comes to sing onstage. A friend will try to convince her that she should become an artist. From a play by the Álvarez Quintero brothers which is based on the life of a real tonadillera (Spanish folk singer), Amalia Molina.—BSK
