Synopsis

Anjaney Agashe (Anil Kapoor), a rugged drug-addicted Inspector, gets rid of known drug dealer by killing them and staging their deaths as an encounter. His daughter Vaani (Devika Vatsa) had been shot during a drug raid in Goa.

Meanwhile, Advait Thakur (Aditya Roy Kapur), is a convict released from prison. Advait is in fantastic physical shape and used his time in prison to build his strength and stamina. In prison Advait defeated every gang who tried to steal his beloved Kalawa like string which had a metal object embedded in it.

Advait calls Agashe on 24th Dec and informs him of an upcoming murder of a cop that night and wishes him Happy Solstice. Advait promises that it will be a long night and cuts the call. Michael Rodrigues is Agashe's colleague, and a plays-by-the-rules cop whose personal life is breaking down as his wife Teresa (Amruta Khanvilkar) is having an affair with another person.

Later, Michael learns that his friend and co-worker Victor (Vatsal Sheth) has been brutally murdered. At the crime scene, Michael meets Agashe and the two are instantly at odds with each other. Agashe wants to kill the killer, while Michael wants the killer to be imprisoned.Michael & Advait investigate to figure out who sold the drugs which were used in ODing the dead cop. Advait again calls (anonymously) and says he will kill another cop the same night. He ends all calls with "Happy Solstice".

This time Agashe tracks the call and finds Advait just after he has murdered another cop Nitin (Keith Sequeira), after kidnapping him from the Goa parade. Agashe works out all the cases of 24th Dec the 2 cops had solved together previously. They come with a drug bust in which Advait was jailed for 5 years. The 3rd cop in their team was Deven Shivaji Jadhav (Prasad Jawade). Advait kills Deven before Agashe or Michael can come to rescue him.

It is implied that Advait is behind the deaths. Michael becomes suspicious of Jessie, a drug-addicted prostitute and Advait's friend. It is implied that Jessie has been helping Advait with the murders.

Michael notices Jessie and follows her to her residing place. On knowing that Michael is following her, Jessie tries to burn down the evidence at her place, but Michael enters and learns that he is also one of the targets on Advait's hit-list. Advait surrenders himself to Agashe and Michael's past with Advait is revealed.

In the past, Advait Thakur, a young introvert, visits Goa where he meets Sara Nambiar (Disha Patani), a free-spirited girl from London who has come to India for the first time to live life unshackled, like a vagabond (Malang). Extreme opposites of each other, they both live it up together and end up having wild passionate sex. Sara is somewhat of a drug junkie. Jessie (Elli Avram) is the dealer whom they procure drugs from in Goa. Jessie also likes Sara and Advait as a couple.

Agashe is an honest and by the book cop who has a daughter, who attends a rave party. Agashe gets news that a repeat drug peddler is at a rave party. He goes to arrest him, but the drug dealer takes Sara hostage. There is a shootout in which Agashe kills the drug dealer, only to realize that in the shootout, his own daughter was shot down and killed.

Agashe turns into a vigilante cop. Sara tells Advait that she is pregnant and won't drop her child. Advait leaves town but comes back a day later as he realizes his mistake. By this time Sara is living with Jessie.

Michael, at this time, is engaged and is impotent. He is afraid of disappointing his future wife and seeks a prostitute to practice. He is given Jessie address by one of the cops in his team. Michael gets there but Jessie is out for shopping, and he takes Sara for Jessie. He tries to sexually assault her when she refuses to take money for sex.

Advait arrives at Jessie's house and finds Michael trying to strangle Sara, where he intervenes and calls the cops. Nitin, Deven and Victor arrive and takes Sara and Advait to the station. However, the police take Advait and Sara to a bridge, where they plan to frame them for drug peddling to avoid Michael's scandal of visiting a prostitute. Michael injects a lethal drug into the couple before throwing Sara off the bridge, while Advait is sentenced to five years in prison.

Five years later, back to the present.Agashe corners Advait, before he can escape, but Advait surrenders to Michael's men before Agashe can shoot him down as an "encounter".In lock-up Michael admits to Advait that Sara had figured out that he was impotent and didn't want this secret to come out and that's why he killed her. Agashe is not aware of the game played by Michael and Michael is counting on Agashe to kill Advait as Agashe sees his daughter's killer in Advait.

Agashe figures out that Michael has played a game, when Michael greets him with "Happy Solstice", a phrase that only Advait had used with Agashe so far. Agashe talks to Advait privately and Advait tells him how Michael and 3 men brutally killed Sara. And that night, was the night for revenge by killing Michael

Agashe is perplexed, as to who will kill Michael in his home when Advait is in his custody. At the same time, Michael goes home and sees that Teresa is about to leave him. Michael suffers a psychotic breakdown and attempts to strangle her, but he gets injected and killed with a drug by Sara, who is still alive.

It is revealed that Jessie had saved Sara, who lost her baby. Over the course of five years, Sara and Advait had been planning to exact vengeance together. Agashe's assistant receives a call informing him that Michael has been killed in his own home. A shocked Agashe wonders and reluctantly releases Advait due to lack of evidence and Teresa protects Sara by telling a fake testimony. Advait and Sara find peace and start a new life, while Agashe receives a phone call from an unknown female caller who similarly informs him about an upcoming murder like Advait.
