Ivan steals art for the Greek. He wants out but can he? He meets an actress at two of his "jobs". She has her own problems but helps him.
Ivan "Theo James" is a gifted and discerning art thief who wants out. Elyse "Emily Ratajkowski" is an aspiring actress whose own past transgressions in Hollywood haunt her, as well as a mountain of debt. These two outsiders are drawn to each other.
Ivan Warding (Theo James) is a thief whose specializes in stealing art from the elite of Los Angeles. The elite of LA own art pieces worth upwards of a million dollars, with minimal security. They are much easier to steal as compared to banks. Ivan enters the parties from the back door or the kitchen of the mansions, which are generally unguarded. He then slips into the room with the art and replaces it with a fake, while carrying out the original disguised as garbage.
He is obliged to a crime boss Dimitri Maropakis (Fred Melamed) and wants to get out of the art heist business. Ray Warding (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) is his brother. Eric is in a drug rehabilitation home but is kicked out for trading the medicines to prostitutes for drugs.
Ivan steals the art and uses the money to pay Dimitri, who owed a lot of money by Ivan's father. With every heist, Ivan saves some money as well, which he puts in the safe in his apartment.Ivan asks Dimitri how much more he owes him, but Dimitri refuses to give a number. Eric Maropakis (Evan Handler) is Dimitri's brother and accountant. Dimitri owns a racetrack and says that the debt that Ivan's father raked up was due to his addiction to gambling. Ivan says that he will stop stealing after 2 more jobs, and Dmitri knows that this is because Ivan has managed to save himself a nice little nest egg.
Dimitri wants Ivan to steal the self portrait of Adolf Hitler from a guy named John Wolf, who is a Nam veteran. John holds the portrait without any security as he is an expert marksman. He once used 26 bullets to kill 11 VC soldiers, hitting each soldier twice, with deadly precision and misfiring his gun only 4 times. John is a highly decorated soldier.John Wolf has a rich collection of Nazi memorabilia, which he keeps in a war room, inside his mansion. Dimitri promises Ivan a cut of $500,000 from the heist.
Elyse Tibaldi (Emily Ratajkowski) is an in-debt aspiring actress who is also a con-woman. Elyse was hit upon by a producer and was about to be sexually harassed, when she locked herself in his toilet. Then she stole his wife's necklace and left her panties in his hamper, which his wife found. The producer later found that Elyse had stolen his wife's necklace and demanded his $250,000, while Elyse had sold it for $50K. The producer won't let Elyse work in LA till she returned his money. Ivan has met Elyse a few times at the same venues where he stole his art from.
Ivan out-thinks John and is able to steal the Adolf self-portrait without a sweat. He mixes sedatives in meat and feeds it to John's dogs to put them out of action. As John goes out of the mansion to investigate, Ivan enters the mansion and steals the portrait effortlessly.Ivan also figures out that he is under police surveillance by detective Lyman Wilkers (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) after one of the rich people he robbed went to the police and one of the party guests was able to give a description of Ivan to the police. Ivan notices a Crown Vic (a standard issue police car), parked outside his house at all times.Ivan learns that Elyse still has $200,000 to return to the producer to get her life back. She has started gambling to earn some money back but ends up losing more often than not.
Ivan goes to Dimitri and tells him that he is being tailed and hence won't hand over the Hitler to Dimitri as a form of insurance. Dimitri is angry and wants Ivan to steal another piece and wants him to deliver both the Hitler and this piece to him to settle his father's debt.
Ivan then meets Lyman who tells Ivan that he is bound to slip up once. He wants Ivan to deliver Dimitri to him. Ivan enlists Elyse's help and even spends a night with her at his apartment.Dimitri sends his henchman to steal the safe in Ivan's apartment where he keeps all the money he got in cuts after delivering the paintings to Dimitri. But Ivan had already anticipated this and moved his money under the fridge. Ivan also spies on the place which Dimitri wants him to rob next and feels he is being set up. And correctly so, as Dimitri's henchman is waiting for Ivan at the apartment at the night of the heist. Ivan outflanks the henchman and hits him with a hammer to death.
Then Elyse goes to work and picks up Dimitri from a bar and takes him to a house for the night. Eric is the chauffeur for the night. But they don't realize that Dimitri had identified Eric. As the plot unfolds, Dimitri beats Eric into unconsciousness and asks Elyse to strip down. Ivan comes in the nick of time. He informs Dimitri that his drink was spiked by Eric and duly Dimitri falls flat in a few seconds. He dies from a cocaine overdose. Ivan had made a recording of his conversation with Lyman as insurance for himself.
As Dimitri is found dead, all the stolen art pieces are recovered from his house. Ivan pays $200,000 to the producer and asks him to restore Elyse's status in LA. Eric, Elyse and Ivan team up for future art heists.
