In the early west, a young husband's trials in raising his child after his wife's unexpected death.

A young family struggling to make it on a the western frontier decides to allow the wife to work at a seamstress shop. As things get better financially, the wife gets sick and passes away. Having married Ellen and sired brat Missy, Clark is happy toiling as bred-winning farmer for years. Then a long drought ruins all harvests, so he misses several mortgage payments and banker Harris considers foreclosure. When Clark's parents arrive for a visit, Ellen has taken on a town job as seamstress, but soon catches scarlet fever, which proves fatal. Clark and his father work their tails off to strike a new water well, if possible.
