Desperate for money, three men plot to kidnap a woman and hold her for ransom.
Prakash (Saif Ali Khan) is a handsome gold digger who thinks he has made it when he woos and subsequently marries Sapna (Sonali Bendre) , only daughter of a rich businessman Mr. Chopra (Dalip Tahil) . However his euphoria is short-lived when he learns that his father-in-law disapproves of him immensely and won't let him make his mark in the business . Finally , Prakash asks Mr.Chopra for some money to start a business of his own but Mr. Chopra refuses . One night , two masked men try to rob Prakash and he places a plan before the duo : they will kidnap Sapna and demand ransom from Mr. Chopra , which will be equally shared between Prakash and the two kidnappers - Rahul (Fardeen Khan) and Harry (Aftab Shivdasani) . Rahul and Harry have a little secret of their own : they are not professional criminals as they pretend to be . Rahul is an unemployed graduate , while Harry is a loafer . Rahul Kapoor (Fardeen Khan) and Harilal "Harry" (Aftab Shivdasani) are two room-mates living in a rented apartment, owing back rent to their landlord for last several months. Rahul is in love with Anjali Murthy(Twinkle Khanna), who is the daughter of the landlord, Dakshina Murthy. Anjali too loves Rahul, but her dad will not accept him as his son-in-law, as Rahul is poor. On a chance meeting with Prakash (Saif Ali Khan), the live-in son-in-law of the Chopras, the two friends scheme with him to abduct his wife, Sapna (Sonali Bendre), and demand a ransom from her parsimonious and controlling dad, Rajiv Chopra (Dalip Tahil). Three slackers living in India, whose names are Prakash, Harry, and Rahul, live a conman-like lifestyle. Rahul is in love with his landlord's daughter, but since he is poor, and has not paid for several months, her father refuses to permit her to marry him. Prakash is in love with Sonia, he marries her, and is all set to live off of his father-in-law, who refuses to give him any money nor take part in the family business. Prakash hits upon a plan to abduct Sonia, demand a hefty ransom, pocket the money, and open his own business. He meets with Rahul and Harry, and together they convince Sonia, who agrees to this plan. A troubled young businessman, Prakash (Saif Ali Khan) lives in Mumbai. He is married to Sapna (Sonali Bendre), who is the daughter of famous rich businessman, Rajiv Chopra (Dalip Tahil). Sapna is an aspiring artist but lacks almost any talent. Yet, she is celebrated in the art world due to her father's money. Prakash also met Sapna at an art gallery and flattered her by praising her paintings. They eventually start dating.
Rajiv Chopra totally hates Prakash, and troubles him all the time. Rajiv is a miser & even though he is a millionaire, he ill-treats his staff & doesn't even give them their due increments. Das Babu (Suresh Bhagwat) has been working for Rajiv for 25 years and yet hasn't received even a Rs 300 increment. Rajiv was against the wedding, but Sapna put her foot down.
After marriage Rajiv gives a cabin to Prakash in his office but treats him worse than a servant. Rajiv won't allow Prakash to work for the company, and only asks him to perform odd jobs like fixing the toilets and so on. Rajiv behaves very differently with Prakash in front of Sapna and doesn't let Sapna realize how much he hates Prakash.When Rajiv is late to office, Prakash does a good job of receiving an American client delegation and making a presentation to them. When Rajiv returns, he berates Prakash, throws him out of the room and asks him to get coffee for everyone.Prakash says that he wants to do something of his own and Sapna convinces Rajiv to listen to Prakash's idea with a view of investing in it. but Rajiv refuses to invest any capital with Prakash. He says that Prakash's idea is utter nonsense and throws the project file on his face. He warns Prakash not to reveal anything to Sapna, else he will be thrown out of the house.
Prakash, who is fed up with being troubled by Chopra, then makes a plan to get Sapna kidnapped to make Rajiv Chopra fork out the money. Prakash hires two broke struggling people, Rahul (Fardeen Khan) and Harry/Harilal (Aftab Shivdasani) who are to be fake kidnappers and kidnap Sapna.Rahul and Harry came to Mumbai 2 years ago to find a job.
Rahul's landlord is Dakshina Murthy and his wife Rameshwari. Murthy's daughter Anjali (Twinkle Khanna) loves Rahul. Rahul & Harry have not paid rent for 6 months. Harry borrows money from a local don Aslam (Jhonny Lever) to pay the rent. Harry knows that Aslam aspires to be a Bollywood hero and flatters him to get his job done.Anjali's dad fixes her wedding with a different guy. When Rahul professes his love for her, her dad says that he has 1 month time to get a job & he will have no hesitation is marrying off Anjali to Rahul.Rahul finds a job but has to pay a 2 Lakhs bribe which he doesn't have. Rahul & Harry decide to rob rich patrons in the car parking of upmarket hotels, which is where they meet Prakash. They find that Prakash has no money & end up narrating their sob story to each other. Thats when Prakash hires them to kidnap Sapna.Prakash promises Rahul and Harry a cut of Rs 25 Lakhs out a ransom of Rs 50 Lakhs.
The plan rides successfully even though Sapna puts up a huge fight before being kidnapped. She is only subdued when she slips on her carpet and knocks herself out. Chopra believes every bit of it. Rahul and Harry demand Rs 50 Lakhs from Prakash, but Prakash tells Rajiv that the kidnappers have demanded Rs.1 Crores as the ransom money, and the fooled Chopra agrees to pay, even after he seeks the help of his IG friend Badrinath (Shri Vallabh Vyas).Rahul and Harry had kept Sapna at their room. They ask Prakash to deliver the money at Gateway of India, but Rajiv goes without Prakash. Unknown to Prakash, Inspector Suraj Singh (Sharat Saxena) was keeping an eye on Rajiv, to arrest the kidnappers. But Harry and Rahul had never seen Rajiv, and were expecting Prakash. A pimp approaches Rajiv and Suraj Singh arrests him, believing the pimp to be the kidnapper.Prakash berates Rajiv for putting Sapna's life in danger. The next time, Rajiv sends Prakash to deliver the money to the kidnappers. Prakash had told Rajiv that the kidnappers are now demanding Rs 2 Crores and promise to pay Rs 50 Lakhs to Harry and Rahul.
Meanwhile, Aslam's obsession with Bollywood takes him to conman Aaj Kapoor (Snehal Dabi), who claims to be a talent scout for major producers in Mumbai. Aaj convinces Aslam to put up Rs 30 Lakhs to star in his own movie and claims that the remaining Rs 70 Lakhs will be funded by a major don.
As the ransom money has been paid, Rahul and Harry set Sapna free and leave her in a forest, which is also part of Prakash's plan. Prakash arrives at the forest to pick up Sapna, however he realizes that she has been kidnapped again but this time by real kidnappers.
The kidnappers call Rajiv for a 3 Crores ransom demand, while Prakash confronts Rahul & Harry & solicits their help to rescue Sapna. Rahul & Harry had developed an emotional bond with Sapna during her captivity and decide to help Prakash. While Rajiv reaches the exchange location with the money, Prakash, Rahul & Harry get there and fight the real kidnappers to rescue Sapna.
Sapna refuses to identify Rahul & Harry in front of the police as the first gang of kidnappers. Rajiv is grateful to Prakash & makes him equal partner in all his companies. Prakash hires Rahul & Harry as employees in his company.
