Wealthy socialite Carol Owen (Dorothy Mackaill) takes up flying lessons with the dashing Jim Leonard (Humphrey Bogart). After Jim makes Carol somewhat queasy with aerial maneuvers, Carol returns the favor by taking Jim on a wild drive at high speeds. Soon they are dating. Jim is working on a new revolutionary aircraft engine but has been unable to obtain funding. Carol asks for financial assistance from her business manager, Bruce Hardy (Hale Hamilton), who has long pursued Carol romantically. Hardy is also seeing aspiring actress Linda Lee (Astrid Allwyn), whom he puts up in a fancy apartment. Unbeknownst to Hardy, Linda is in love with Broadway producer Georgie Keeler (Bradley Page), to whom she gives all money that Hardy gives to her. Hardy also does not know that Linda is Jim's sister, and Jim does not know that his sister is an unscrupulous gold-digger. Carol realizes she distracts Jim from his work and turns down his proposal of marriage. When Hardy tells Carol that she has been broke for a year and he has paid her bills, she agrees to marry him. When Jim learns of their engagement, he angrily refuses any more backing from Hardy. But Linda, who has been cut off by Hardy and wants more money, tells Jim that Hardy seduced her and made false promises. Jim confronts Hardy and Carol and all parties learn the truth. Jim is disillusioned, but Carol is heartbroken and ready to take drastic measures.—Patrick Depew
